I was talking about "traditional" (read: non LAC) colleges. Top LACs (Williams especially) have great placement per capita into banks, and I believe even Jane Street recruits on campus there, but they only have 500 people per class so the raw numbers are worse.
that's not true. I was accepted into multiple Ivies (including the #1 college in the nation, where I ended up attending) and my parents only made around $400k. However, I was also very motivated so I had great grades, test scores, and ECs.
My family was middle class (stay at home mom- was a teacher before having kids -and my dad worked for a regional phone company before being bought out by a large bell), attended public school, and I went to Columbia. None of my friends were rich (well, maybe one was upper middle class). Others came from families of teachers and various other lower paying professions. 3 had Pell grants. I went into business and basically had one offer for a job and have parlayed that into a pretty successful career. I had not connections. Going to CU helped me get an interview for sure (because my industry recruits at Ivies), but that was it.
Nome of my friends as an adult are from Ivies and they’re all successful. And no one really bashes anyone else. Can be successful, rich, poor, connected, not connected, etc. no matter where you go.
the problem w your logic is harvard can only recruit from a sliver of the athlete pool that UW can, bc the min academic standards to go to harvard (even for elite athletes) is still so high
They aren’t THAT high. (Personal experience. Went to Ivy as recruit and I had no business based on test scores and grades being there.) I’m not saying the alternative is appropriate either. I’m saying let’s not compare.
You did not go to Harvard then. I did as an elite athlete and getting in was no joke. While I was not a genius, the academic requirements and application were rigorous and stressful.
Imagine being the top academic school in the country and also putting three guys under four minutes. This definitely tops Washington's feat in my books.

Harvard basketball loss to Brown still takes the headline of the day. Anyways, it’s cool to see the non conventional training of Gibby to be working. These poor guys are typically out there hammering daily for inconsistent results.
Always the same misconceptions regarding Ivies. My son got recruited by Harvard. They had us send them every detail of our financial life. We had an hour with a financial aid guy while on his official visit. He broke the news to us that they were offering no discount even though our income was on $180K but the reason was that we had save way too much money. The guy told us we could by a piece of artwork for a few million dollars and get back to them and our price would drop by 2/3. That didn't sit well with my wife that we would have to pay mire than our friends who made significantly more while taking vacations and driving very expensive cars. My son chose Penn State on a full ride of which 90% was academic. Some posters claim that Harvard has few rivals in the recruiting process but I would guess that there are many kids who chose the cheaper option. And others claim that Harvard is generous with aid even though 50% of attendees will pay $340K to attend and many of us don't have high income but are merely very frugal.

You can get by with $400K per year. Basic necessities can be met.

I don't think it's unreasonable for the financial aid office to determine that if you were able to spend "a few million dollars" to lower your liquidity in an attempt to get financial aid, you were also more than able to afford the quarter million to pay full tuition and board for four years. Good for your son for earning scholarships, but if I had that kind of money I would happily use it to pay for my child's education. I understand that you felt punished for making sound financial decisions, but it's not the hill I would have chosen to die on. As someone who attended an Ivy on full financial aid but never felt "poor" growing up, I'm always astounded by complaints about Ivy financial aid (particularly at HYP)—because if you're not getting any, you can probably afford the ticket price.

Gibby has done a great job turning the program at Harvard around since being hired a few years ago. If you add in Ewing who ran 3:58 last year, Harvard now has 4 sub-4 milers on roster. That's impressive for any school and they deserve their flowers without being interrupted by the same ivory tower/sour grapes rants.

It doesn't devolve. There are always a few posters who claim that every kid gets a big discount even if parents are wealthy. Clearing it up for people is helpful. Yes they can do what they want but that doesn't make it morally right. Imagine that you have 2 kids who earn the same amount of money. One spends everything on alcohol and women and cars while the other one saves his money. Do you then give $80K to one every year at Christmas while giving the other one nothing because one has $1M saved while the other has nothing saved? When people are rewarded for bad behavior, they will behave badly.
