I agree with Salvatore that it's at least as likely that Morceli was always doping, but I don't see why a couple here are saying it's wildly implausible he started after Barcelona.
The thing is, we all seem to agree that Morceli was on EPO most of his career. So the question is - when did he start using it? This is a difficult question, because most people here think that EPO wasn't being used by runners until at least 91 or 92.
So at what point in his career did he start using it? The biggest 'jump' in his career occured right after Barcelona. That's all we can say.
As hard as it seems to be for the board to accept this it's not incorrect. Statistically his biggest improvement came after Barca and is it plausible that this coincided with the beginning of PED use? Yes. I mean we know another fact about this - there was a point at which it started and that point in time would make sense.
Personally I think that the performance in Tokyo starts making me sit up my chair a little more - 3.32.85 closing in 51.5/6, but then again this is also only based on anecdotal evidence which isas all any of us have and again, I don't see the harm in theorizing.
What's also (and again for me) likely is that post Barcelona things just ramped up. He had the classic "HGH" jawline/busted up dental situation which is a classic sign of growth hormone use and this really started being obvious post 92. And like cyclists on the circuit eventually the same sh-t everyone is using comes to light and guys start using it with reckless abandon as not to miss out on anything that could make them better. Like many things the truth here is likely 100% a combination of theories floated on this thread (if he was doping of course ;-)
