While it likely is commotio cordis, the timing has to be "perfect". A blow to the chest at just the wrong time in the cardiac cycle disrupts the electrical signal pathway. I have seen case studies of this happening in baseball where a pitch hits a player in the chest (on a bunt in the case I read about) and even in mountain biking (the rider crashed and was launched over the bars landed on his chest).
There has been 1 death on the NFL field and it was not this condition that caused it then.
