What struck me about Simpson's admission was that I recall observing how much he had appeared to have improved at Kingston in '66 as against his efforts two years earlier in Tokyo. Admitting he had doped explained it. I was also impressed at his honesty in coming clean about it. What is possible is that because he wasn't actually busted he may have changed his mind later - which he could do - and retained his silver medal, while withdrawing reports of his public admission.
