Well it's quite simple really. The purpose of Tuohy's NCAA racing tactic was to win the race which she did. She left from the starting line, which is point "A", and arrived at the finish line, point "B", before anyone else. Therefore, her tactic worked perfectly.
Chmiel has the same final closing split (if I read it accurately) as Tuohy and finished within 7 seconds of Valby. She separated herself from the pack quite impressively.
Right she did, and I think being able to tuck in behind Tuohy and others for much of the race helped her conserve energy.
chmiel almost got valby, that would have been brutal for valby if kelsey got her
imho the big beneficiary of what Tuohy did was Chmiel. Tuohy staying where she was kept a big pack there, and tho Tuohy pretty much led that pack, Chmiel sat right in the middle of it, maybe until she started moving at around 5K.
This is true...but as much as much as it helped Chmiel, it also helped all the other runners in that pack. Stearns, Roe, Olmomoi etc...the impressive part is that Chmiel blew that pack away. She waited a little longer after Tuohy went, but from around the 4.5KM mark (the same place her and Tuohy were using all year) she outran the rest of the pack by 6 to 12 seconds.
This goes to show how good Chmiel is at climbing hills and XC in general.
My feeling after watching some of her races this year is that she’s never been full out in any of them. Stay with the pack and take off when appropriate. But all those were without Valby. This time, when she went, she unleashed everything she had in pursuit. Valby wasn’t slowing much but you could see she was in a bit of distress.
Valby will be wicked on the track so there’s plenty more showdowns to come.
Valby will be a wicked pacesetter on the track, so there's plenty more opportunities for fast finishers to get towed along.
I hope Valby races differently on the track. There is zero advantage racing aggressively early on the track. No one is fooled. I raced aggressively early in XC and road races simply to stay clear of hundreds of humans.
But to follow up this comment on how good Chmiel is, one stat to show how impressive Tuohys last 2.4km were….Tuohy picked up her pace at 3.6km (very obvious on the original video)… from there until the 4.93 split, she put 10 seconds on Chmiel…who herself was running away from the pack. Tuohy then still ran (along with Chmiel) the fastest last split.
Did Valby do anything to conceal her capabilities? She ran three races hell bent for leather. I think Tuohy had a good sense of what Valby's limits were and their relative strengths. In retrospect Tuohy knew coming in that she could handle Valby. You can see it at the prerace press conference. Again, she spotted Valby 11 seconds then ran her down in a kilometer, catching her well before the final turn.
Tuohy also had random people telling her exactly how far ahead Valby was the whole race while valby ran in the blind.
Give Valby another few more months of consistent training and she will level up even more. By next fall I suspect this will be very one sided in Valby's favor. Just my opinion
Ok. But could have sworn that was the narrative after the 5000m. Valby is a very impressive athlete. One of the strongest college runners I have seen. But Tuohy just flat out ran her down after spotting her a big lead, and Valby does not fade. Tuohy just outran her. Maybe it is because Tuohy looks young, but it easy to forget that Tuohy is a beast. I think I'm done underestimating her.

i really hope valby gets even better so that katelyn will too .. if valby didnt run fast, katelyn would have not ran faster hahaha
Remember Daniel do Nascimento at New York two weeks ago? If someone is going too fast, let her go and reel her in like Evans Chebet did. Tuohy did the same thing - stayed with the pack and made her move when the time was right.
Pre did the same thing with Nick Rose in 1973 and didn’t need a pack to do so.

You actually think for 2000 meters no one told Valby Tuohy was starting to chase? Good lord. There is a guy on video telling valby something right before she gets caught. People all over the course are saying stuff to the runners, not just Tuohy.

She was really cruising. You can see it on the video. Why did NCAA chop that k out of the upload? Its the whole part where she starts to surge. Really unfortunate.
