Surely Taggart got the OTQ this time, right? I only saw 45 posts, Tweets, and comments about it. Or was that before Grandma’s? Or was that before 2021 Indy…?
Nope, he dropped out like a baby. He invited his whole family including his soon to be in-laws who were watching him race for the first time. Needless to say, the in-laws were unimpressed and are asking their daughter if this is truly the man she wants to marry. Even more uncomfortable is the fact that the in-laws talked up their potential son-in-law on their own social media and now have to respond to all the questions about whether he qualified. Emily across the street had been checking the app to follow him, but then she didn’t see any splits after halfway. She assumed the app wasn’t working and will wait to hear the great news when her neighbors get home from their potential son-in-law’s race.
Great job finishing in those conditions. How much slower did you run compared to what you would have expected in good weather?
I think it cost me 4 or 5 minutes.
I will be interested to hear from others about possible time losses due to the conditions. I was able to get a 2 minute PR. But I was still 3 minutes slower than I was thinking I could be. And on a good day, I think I had another 1 or 2 minutes more than that in me.
But we all got some pretty good stories from this one. Definitely different than Boston, but that wind the last 3 miles was absolutely insane.
The half wasn't bad, I still got a PB and I'm a hobby jogger extraordinaire. Spectating the full was where it got dicey. Traffic lights swaying and people's hats getting blown into the last turn before the finish line.
I ran the full. The first half was not bad. I never felt the wind at my back, and I did feel the wind, but it was still early and it wasn't bad. I blew up later in the race (17-21) spending too much time fighting the wind. Not too hot, with the rain and wind. But I am surprised that some people were able to run so well yesterday. Not a good day for me. Conditions were rough in the back half.

This is about my experience. I thought on a good day I could break 2:20, and missed that by a couple minutes. First half was easy - I’ve run with stronger “feeling” tailwinds, but my splits were also quick so… we definitely benefitted. 14-22 were quite windy and rough, but it wasn’t the worst I’ve felt… the last 5K was genuinely about as bad of wind as I’ve run into (and definitely in a race). Hard to put a number on how much it cost (I ran a little faster in Chicago, but also had a messy race there for other reasons).
Overall, I’d say it wasn’t the sh**show many of us feared, but also a really, really tough day to PR, so huge kudos to those who did. The half was indeed quite fast - which was impressive given it uses the same homestretch as the marathon. Probably closer packs helped? And maybe just some really tough racers.

And I lost my hat, too! About mile 19. If anyone finds a stray blue mesh hat in Indianapolis…
I think 4 to 5 minutes is about right. I adjusted and went out a couple minutes slower the first half and still ran a 2 min positive split. Those last 3 miles I gave back a minute all right there. I was holding it together pretty well until the turn south near 23

Interesting thoughts, thanks. I gambled and went out fast. Not sure if it was smart or not, but I still got the PR. I was 1:21-mid/1:24-high, so not quite a 4 minute positive split.
I would be thrilled if I could have done 4-5 minutes faster than that in normal/good conditions (like Indy last year). It would have put me on the top of my super reach A goal for time. It would also mean my next marathon would have me thinking of sub 2:40. But now that still seems pretty far away as I've only officially got the 2:46. But we'll just see how the winter and spring go.
My goal going in (and better conditions) was sub 2:40. I ran a HM PR 6 weeks ago and I did a couple of 20-22 mile long runs where I closed the last 10-11 miles in 6:02-6:05 average.
At Indy I went out in 1:21:15 and ended up with a 29 second PR running 2:44:31. My 25th mile was 6:51 with a HR Max that is the same as the last mile of a 5K race, I felt like I was barely moving in some parts due to the wind gusts.
I passed so many people in the last 3 miles even though I was also slowing down. There were 4-5 people that finished right behind me that went out in 1:18-1:19 for the first half and paid for it in the last 5k.
ALH it sounds like we had very similar races - I was targeting 2:40-2:42 on a better day and still managed to come across in 2:42:08 despite the weather (1:20:19 first half, 1:21:49 second half). Was still tracking for mid-2:41 at mile 24, but those last 3 miles were absolutely brutal with the winds! They seemed to get worse as the morning went on and I suspect people targeting 3:30-4:00 finishes were the most affected.
A few race stats from crunching the numbers (comparing the top 1000 finishers):
Runners who Negative Split: 8% this year, 33% last year
Median % Slowdown (2nd half minus 1st half, divided by 1st half): 5.2% this year, 1.3% last year
Average Finishing Time Differential, Repeat Runners (n = 121): +3.5 minutes (with a TON of variance)
