Don't think anything was suspicious about this performance. About 8 seconds over Chelangat was reasonable. But when coaches come from a certain pro background, well then I cannot just blindly accept anything associated with their program. Fair or not, that's the reality.

Every thread gets dominated by this garbage, and posters trying to make interesting points comparing times and courses are drowned out.

Maybe the course was short, maybe not. But there's no coincidence that this kind of time was thrown down by Valby. She is the real deal. 10:10 as a junior at a program that produces little xc success is insanely good. Her hs team has girls running in the 20-22 range typically. It is very rare to have top runners in xc from middling to bad programs. For instance, in one regionals in Florida that I was looking at, there were something like 4 unattached runners (runners whose teams didn't qualify for regionals) in the top 50-60 runners. Chelangat we know is a top talent with a national xc championship. Valby was a 15:20ish runner on limited training last year. Chelangat's teammate, Hilda Olemomoi, just beat her last time out. So, the sub-19s make sense on a fast course with Valby having an incentive to really push the pace to avoid the kick. A 16 flat runner ran 20 flat. The times are much faster than at the 5k because they were in full high mileage training and still adjusting to a month of workouts in September and now they are seeing the fruits of all that training. Some won't even run better than they are now, as they'll be overcooked. You even worry about the effects of an all out effort at this point in the season prior to regionals.

Valby beat Van Camp by 40 seconds. Tuohy beat her by 22 at Nuttycombe, but it would appear she could have gone faster as she never pressed pace until 4.8 K. One might conclude on limited data Valby at this point is a little faster.
