Robert Johnson still lives in Baltimore, right? If so, I will be willing to drive down there every weekend to pace him for a long run workout and will pace him to sub 3. For reference rojo my marathon PB is 2:47 and ran a similar time this spring.
Exactly. If he a) drops the beer and focuses on water intake to reduce hunger, b) watches what he eats and c) exercises multiple times per day to yield caloric defecit for one straight month... he might trim 30lbs down, couch to consistent training regimen, just by becoming active.
You’ve also put up over 10,000 posts here and nothing more insightful than navel gazing. Goofball Greg is trying to catch up with that volume for pathetic waste! Take the next year off, you’ve earned it.
Where exactly is Rojo in this conversation? When did JG say he doesn’t think Rojo can run under 3? Like you ask, is Rojo even training? What is his goal marathon?
So many questions. Rojo & JG need to get on the board and put it all out there.
Rojo said it in the thread about Jenny Simpson. He mentioned something about how Puma should send him some shoes as he restarts his career in the marathon. Rojo said JG said he won’t break 3 but he (Rojo) knows he will. Page 3 of the thread.
I would actually pay a little bit of money to get access to a LRC "Breaking3" project. Chronicle his training. Get him some super shoes. Have a pace car like Kipchoge's but with flashlights on it instead of lasers. It would be comedy gold. And it would also be really interesting to see if a talented 50 year-old could get back into shape after years of no serious running.

In the six months between 44.5 and 45 I ran three marathons in 2:32, 2:40 and 2:39. At age 51 I ran 2:51. For me, hitting my 45th birthday really impacted my running.
I don’t know if Rojo is lazy or not but he has little motivation to try to run sub 3 and little awareness it appears of how challenging it would be. I do not believe that Rojo will ever run sub 3. Could Rojo run a 5:05 mile if he trained for a year? Maybe.
I’m pretty sure he can. I ran my first marathon just before my 55 birthday and ran 2.51.
I did nothing from 27 to 40. I’d say rojo is a more talented runner than me. Although I’m probably more of a marathon runner than him. I doubt he’s motivated to do it though. Given his stage of life age of children and upbringing it’s hard to see why he’d be motivated to do this. I had bad knees and Achilles and so almost all my training was slow. I was motivated as I thought it was my last chance to try one and prove I was really a marathon runner. He really doesn’t have that.

perhaps running 3 marathons within 6 months is a bad idea. were these all out marathons or were they 90% effort marathons?
If he puts in at least minimum of training, sub 3 should be fairly easy. At least 35 to 40mpw if he is not packing a ton of extra weight. I am still amazed at how slow Bob Kennedy has run at NYC several years ago.

My lifetime best at age 30 was only 2:51. I ran 2:59 last year at age 46. I think he is about my age, isn't he? If Rojo has run 2:30 he will have NO problem going under 3:00 if he does a little training.
I don't get all the down votes. I thought he ran 2:30; he actually ran 2:23:11 and 1:07:10. Rojo ran 28 minutes faster at his best than I did at my best and only 5 minutes slower than Wejo's PR. Heck, he ran faster than 99% of the people on this board. I'm 17 years older and about seven pounds over what I was when I ran my best and have only slowed about 8 minutes. Nobody is saying he can run a 3:00 tomorrow but if he did some training he would have no trouble. If he takes it seriously and targets a fall marathon one year from now, I can see him going under 2:50. Too many of you are letting you dislike of Rojo cloud your judgement regarding how fast he can run.

OK but you are sort of lying to us in a way. 17 years later and 8 lbs heavier and you are only 8 minutes slower in the marathon? You are not telling us something or else you lack the awareness to tell us.
It makes me sad that I am responding to a Rojo marathon prognostication thread, but here I am. That said, I put the odds of Rojo breaking 3hrs in 6mos at around a 1-2%. Not lottery wining unlikely, but still quite unlikely.
I’m almost just like Rojo. Similar times. Similar age. Similar proclivities, and was similar in weight. About 4mos ago, I decided to get in “shape” again with the goals of sub5 and sub250 at 50 years old (18 months away). Since then, I’ve lost about 20lbs, but have plateaued for the last 3-4 weeks. It looks like I may have change my diet to lose the next 20lbs, and I really don’t want to have to do that. I doubt Rojo would. I’m running around 45-50 miles a week. Its starting to come around (first 2 months were horrific), but its not like it used to be. It always feels like I’m on the verge of injury. When I try plyos, I feel ancient and I’m sure I look it. At the moment, I can’t imagine attempting 26 miles all at one go. The me of 20 years ago was a different person. The mile would be about 5:15 and 5K close to 18.
In short, I think he’d have to REALLY want it (not likely), the 6mos runway would be too short, and the odds of injury pretty high. Maybe I’d give him a 2.5% chance (at the highest). Sorry, Rojo, but you know I have to call it like I see it!
