Coach-athlete sex, rape and PEDs at Huntington University? Nick Johnson scandal gets grimmer thanks to David Woods expose

This. It's the only answer.

David Woods article is only scratching the surface. This needs so much more attention and should be national news before it gets worse.

For sure, if you read the police report, the only way this minor thought she could be successful was by having Nick as a coach, she basically said she would not be as successful with any other coach. Clear indication of grooming in my opinion, but I’m no expert.

It’s been 24+ hours now and no response from Huntington.

I think the answer to my question is that, no, guilt has not been determined by the process we have (which I understand takes time, so it is not super popular). We are currently in the allegation, reporting, and fact-finding stage.

That said, I do acknowledge that a determination (and confession) for the “stolen identity” Oregon trip (totally awful, btw, obviously) was reached, and the punishment for that has been served. Clearly, if these new allegations are found to be true, we can expect much harsher consequences for all involved.

This is correct, right? If not, what am I missing?

The current allegations arise from a civil suit filed by the victims against the named defendants. If the jury find in favor of the victims against the defendants an award of monetary damages can be made. The "burden of proof" in a civil case is lower (easier to prove) than a criminal case.

The state and/or federal government would need to bring criminal charges based on any new allegations that have come to light that are not barred by any applicable statue of limitations. If found guilty, a defendant can face both fines and/or incarceration.

There may be an open criminal investigation, but it sounds like the state's hands were tied in the previous case because a victim recanted and refused to cooperate.

Nick Johnson admitted through verifiable and legal means that he assaulted a minor and had intercourse with at least one athlete. The punishment was mostly dodged due to lack of cooperation from the victim.

You’re not missing anything in a legal sense, but to hide behind “this is a legal process” is to ignore the ongoing abuse. Cosby and Weinstein were cancelled in the public sphere long before they faced legal consequences. This situation should be no different. Huntington has an obligation to protect their athletes, which means shutting down the program immediately.

If the facts of this case as they are being presented in the article and in the court documents are accurate, the program being cancelled will be the least of everyone's concerns.
And if this is being allowed to take place in this program, what do the other sports programs at that school look like? There needs to be a top-down school clean out. And I'm not just talking about the Athletic Director and his associates either. Everyone has to go. Some need to do jailtime.

I do not understand why authorities did not charge him with more than just the impersonation felony. He literally admitted to the crimes? Maybe both Nick and Victim 1 recanted their confessions, but still.

Yes, please get a statement from Pat Casey.

3 - So, while Lauren was out setting gimmicky world records for attention at the end of her career (“Kind of business as usual for me,” she said. “It’s a bit different because I’m toward the end of my career. So that’s going to present additional challenges for me. But everybody has their own thing they’re dealing with. I guess it’s going to be who can adapt the best.”) her husband was starting his process of grooming the victim. Specifically, sometime between July 16 and August 10, he created the fictitious email address showing to be from Jill Steele, a cross country coach at the University of Oregon.

4 - The "recruiting trip" took place from August 6 to August 8.

THIS INFURIATES ME SO MUCH.

The biggest "unbelieveable" in this case to me has to do with the victim (victim #1) who's parents have apparently gone along for the ride in this case.

If Nick Johnson mis-represented himself as an official with the University of Oregon program when he took the teenager to Portland and Eugene, can the U of O sue him and Huntington University (since he was in their employ at the time) out of existence?

Read the original 58 page police report. Victim 1 has no father in her life (or a strained relationship at best) and the relationship with the mother isn't great either.

Everyone should read that 58 page document. It has taken me about 2 hours to get through, but it is eye opening. Maybe the craziest part, if it weren't for 2 classmates of Victim 1 being willing to speak out about something they heard, this could very well still be going on.
