Easy: Having moved away from the USA. This country just is not safe. For real. Since I moved to Europe I feel so much safer on my runs. No guns, no random durggies that camp out on trails and will yell at you. Denser cities meaning more people out and about not these deserted suburbs. In the US you are only safe in enclaves of richness.
I've lived in the UK and the USA. Here are my notes on run safety:
The short summary is that I felt MUCH safer in the UK than the US. I lived in a not-so-great area of London, btw. This safety was in two forms: safety from people and from cars.
Starting with traffic first: people in London are used to the presence of pedestrians and cyclists and are just better drivers, frankly. Over in the US, in a lot of places, drivers just aren't used to being in shared spaces with pedestrians or bikes and are complete boneheads.
But the point of this thread is fear of being attacked. I would create 3 categories for this: 1) crazy people who yell at you/chase you/try to attack you 2) sex pest pervs 3) men between 13-25 (or at least at that MENTAL age) who just act like idiots and yell stuff at people
For (1) this is where the US is way worse than Europe. I think this is b/c European countries have socialized health care and actively take care of people with mental issues. In the US, these people are just left to rot on the streets.
For (2) this is probably a wash between the two locations
And for (3) this issue is way worse in the US. Getting yelled at while running by a young man in that age bracket is super common whereas in London it almost never happened. Not sure why. Maybe it is b/c mentally they are still children?
