Jerome Blake has only run 10.00 and 20.04. Lyles has run almost a second faster over 200m than Blake and HE LOSES TO BLAKE.
We knew De Grasse is one of the best ever and we needed to give Bracy a big lead. Lyles blew it.
Bracy was the silver medalist during these Champs. And De Grasse didn’t even make the Finals. Why does the 2nd fastest man in the world need a ‘big lead’?
I understand De Grasse’s history and the difference between relays and open 100m, but c’mon.
Because both Bracy and Bromell are incompetent at anchoring relays. He didn't gain one inch on a not fully fit Degrasse. Bromell got run down once by Japanese. Bracy couldn't edge pass a guy who isn't fully fit.
When will USA relay management going to stop making these idiotic decisions is anyone's guess.
The reason you guys are giving Bracy such a hard time is because you underrate DeGrasse. Ato Bolden said it best, “De Grasse never gives up a lead”. The only person to run down ADG was Bolt. Andre loses a race only when he runs out of space to run you down, when he’s abreast or a little ahead it’s hard to catch him, that’s how he won the 200m in Tokyo he was abreast Kenny, Lyles with a small lead coming into the stretch. That’s also how he beat Kerley in the 100m at Pre just after the Olympics setting his PB, he had the quickest 100m start of his life. If De Grasse was in 2021 shape he would have widened the gap with Bracy.
Another runner like Mitchel-Blake, US would have won.
You said it best. Team Canada usually gives Andre the baton in 5th - 6th position he rallies and wins second or third. This was the first time, he was given the baton in that incredible position, he wasn’t letting go of that lead lol.
Deno, I'm shocked that someone who purports to be such an expert on sprinting can not see how Lyles screwed up. Did Coleman run right up on him? Yes. Did Lyles get out quickly? No. He might have run quickly after he got the baton but the stick needs to be moving quickly the whole time. Coleman did his job, Lyles didnt do his job.
You pretty much nailed it! Lyles gave a weak target on the hand off and got out slow which allowed Blake to catch him. When I saw Degrasse even with Bracey, I knew we were in trouble. Degrasse and Bracey in 100m with a running start...advantage goes to Degrasse. Coleman gave us a nice lead, after that all we needed was decent handoffs. I understand the rationale of putting Lyles on 3rd, but there is no way Degrasse would have beaten Lyles in a foot race to the finish line. Bracey got beat by someone who is barely in sub-10 shape right now.

Only place Lyles belongs on a 4x1 is anchor, you can't have him thinking about handing off that is ridiculous, Carl Lewis handing off? Donovan Bailey handing off? Stupid idea putting this guy on any other leg. He runs away from DeGrasse,
Knighton is great at running the turn, but has he ever run an elite level 4x100? Or even a fast one? Kid just finished high school, I can't imagine he's got tons of good relay experience yet.
A lot of high school teams execute baton passes better than the US national team.
I trained an 8th-grade CYO team to use alternate hand blind passes. We won the county championship without having any 100 runners on the podium (well ok they got medals, but no podium) in the individual event -- our flawless passes won the day. It can be done. US pros have too much ego to learn how do to it right, they'd rather rely on speed.
I guess when you step over the line tits okay now. I’m sure that half a step was enough to seal the deal. sucks when you have to cheat to win. canada dq
Abby ran an INSANE 9.86 for her leg. It was .013 ahead of the next fastest on that leg and she was .24 faster than Jamaica on 2nd leg.Abby beat Elaine Thomson-Herah, a 10.54 100m runner, by .24.
For those asking why Bromell is not in the relay lineup. He can only replace Coleman in the relays. They both have similar racing phases. Coleman has had a faster 60m this year. Bromell like Coleman can be unpredictable in maintaining his speed. Too risky for Bromell to run the 2,3&4 leg.

Stop with this nonsense that Lyles would have beaten De Grasse.YOU CAN SEE THE SPLITS AND DE GRASSE RAN FASTER THAN LYLES. EVEN JEROME BLAKE RAN FASTER THAN LYLES.
Yes you read that correctly, Bracy only ran .01 slower than Lyles. Lyles was .08 slower than a 10.00/20.04 runner and Lyles was .15 slower than De Grasse.

Split times in a relay can be very misleading and it’s not a true measure of performance. All runners in a 4x1 will not run an equal distance of 100m, I think it’s a range of 80-130m. The exchange zone is 30m so a runner could run less or more. Also, did a runner with a fast split get a smooth seamless exchange and a runner with slower split had to slow down or started accelerating late. Only fans are obsessed with split times. The general consensus was Melissa had a great start to get the lead, Steiner held her own, Pradini destroyed the curve and TT ran the race of her life to hold off Shericka. All the women did an amazing job to upset Jamaica.
No in this thread seems to know anything about the 4x1. The loss is mostly lyles fault. Final exchange was not good but first exchange was awful. The 4x1 is won and lost on the exchanges, not the runners. That exchange between coleman and lyles cost them up to 0.5 seconds. There's a reason a team like China who can't get a guy under 10 can get into the 4x1 final almost every year and has olympic bronze. 4 10.3 guys with flawless exchanges will beat 4 us guys running 9.8 with crap handoffs like coleman and lyles
I was very close to the scene in the 80s when “everyone” was suspected of doping and all notable coaches were properly under suspicion and the federations including US pushed it all under the rug.
In the same vein, prima donnas as someone said are responsible for just about every men’s 4 x 1 screwup with no true relay czar given the authority to read these guys the riot act.
You do know Lyles had to slow to hand off why DeGrasse didn't.......right?
Little doubt Lyles should have anchored and if he would have the USA wins the gold.
You aren't supposed to slow to hand off. If Lyles ran his leg correctly, he wouldn't have slowed down. Blake isn't making excuses for his 8.86 leg with 2 handoffs.

Split times are EXACT! The split is calculated when the baton crosses each 100m mark. It is an exact 100m time, not 95 or 105. Some runners may have run 95 or 105 but the split is the EXACT time the baton went those EXACT 100m.
Steiner didn't just hold her own, SHE WON THE RELAY FOR THEM. She beat the 2nd fastest runner in world history by almost a quarter of a second on the 2nd leg.
Bracy should have had the same head start that TT had but Lyles screwed it up.

100% correct. It's not Coleman's fault for that handoff, it's 100% Lyles. USA should have been .5 up on Canada by the time Bracy got the baton but they were only up .09.
With World Champions on the 1st and 2nd leg, USA only had a .02 lead heading into Hall on 3rd leg? That's a colossal breakdown of the 1st 2 legs. Hall ran well, he ran faster than Lyles would have run on 3rd leg. 9.31 on the turn is very strong.
