Syd would have 4 days to recover before the heats of the 400h heats. Mu would have 6 days to recover before the heats of the 800.
It's pathetic. Shame on those athletes if they are backing out, but I have a feeling it's USATF calling the shots.
When you are preparing for the World Championships in an individual event, you schedule your training and travel to be ready for that first round race and subsequent rounds.
It can be very disruptive to throw in an all out 400m race at the stadium 4-6 days ahead of that. It’s not about recovery from that race.
They would have a specific workout or rest day scheduled for that day. You don’t mess with that for a gimmick event.
There is no way the agents and coaches of our stars would of allowed their athletes to run this relay. USATF deserves all the ridicule they get, but this time they really had no say.
Is it true that the order was dictated as man/woman/man/woman? It used to be up to the team. It was always entertaining watching any team with a woman anchoring getting walked down by the ones with men anchoring.
Why should someone be fired when noone really cares one way or another?
Okay maybe 30 people care. Count the number lamenting on these boards, that's surely all of them. There's nowhere else to lament it.
With the overwhelming take on this edition of the Worlds being that it represents a massive opportunity to showcase/build support for the sport in the US, putting a relay out on the track that isn’t our best is shameful…especially on Day 1.
The casual viewer will not understand (not care) why certain relay legs were chosen, they’ll just know that the USA/home team got WALKED down to ‘’only’’ end up with bronze.
Felix was in better shape than that. She misjudged her run and died.
There’s not much evidence for that.
Felix, for all her greatness, stayed exactly one year too long. Just like Usain Bolt did. Good thing is she left it all out there. Bad thing is she hurt her team doing that. At the end no one will remember this race but it would have been nice to have finished differently.
Not much evidence? Did you watch it or not? She flew through the 200 and ran out of legs with 60 to go.
USATF wanted the AF story line. But since she came in 6th at the trials they felt obliged to use the 4th and 5th place runners in the line-up to avoid criticism of favoritism (LOL). With the fact that they could only sub one runner, AND wanted AF in the final, they were stuck with the other 2 and not using Steiner or Mu or anyone else. They got what they deserved.
Actually, I would say "don't enter it." Plenty of countries took this event seriously. If the United States thinks this is a joke event, an excuse for letting some of its lower-tier athletes say that they ran in a World Final, then the U.S. should step aside and let the countries that care compete.

Felix doesn't have another event. She should have ran both rounds so we could have subbed in Steiner, Muhammad, Mu, Ellis, or Diggs to run anchor. The US men ran very well. The US women...not so much. DR ran Paulino (may win the open 400) against Felix. It is no surprise she got snatched.
Or put it at the end of the meet with the other “real” relays. Put it before the regular 4x4 and force the countries to show depth or choose which relay to focus on.
Mu, the hurdlers, 200 runners and 400 runners would all be available after they are done with their individual events.
Putting it at the start of the meet basically eliminates the elites from competing in it.
(and put a team XC event at the end with 1500, steeplers, 5000 and 10,000 runners lining up together after they are done with their individual races)

Ugh. None of the medal winners would show up for an XC race at the end of the meet. It would be taken even less seriously than the mixed relay.
Why would their agents not want their athletes to get an EXTRA free gold medal? If you can say Mu won 3 gold medals versus 2 gold medals, her marketability skyrockets. Or someone like Talitha Diggs who likely has little chance of a open 400 medal.
