Hoare. McSweyn. Teare. How about Ryun? Sahlman is pretty average size for a runner his age.
Hoare and McSweyn have thicker builds, and certainly thicker legs. Teare is nearly as skinny, but not quite. This is precisely my point. Sahlman will gain power and improve with another 5lbs in college. Very few are able to translate such a low BMI to elite success (Yomif Kejelcha comes to mind).
And not sure what you’re smoking, but Sahlman is absolutely NOT an average size for a distance runner his age. Are you kidding me? 5’11” 125 lbs is a BMI of 17.4. This is not only way below average, it is multiple standard deviations below, and not sustainable.
His college coach will understand this, and help him get stronger, as they did with Nico, who is now 7-10 pounds heavier and absolutely crushing it in college so far.
You and Sahlman’s college coach understand he needs to put on some weight, but not Brosnan? The NP kids do strength work 3 mornings a week which seems to have done nothing for Colin as far as putting on any more bulk. How do you know he’ll do more serious lifting in college or if his coach would even consider it to be necessary? Do you know if Nico increased his strength work compared to what he did in HS? Nico crushed it in HS as well.
Was it clear out of HS that Fisher would be a 10000 runner? What’s Tuohy’s best event? Even after 2 years of college, I’m not sure we know. She should run the 10 as well.
I doubt if Fisher ever had the 800m speed to really consider himself to be a 1500m specialist and the same for Touhy. It seems pretty clear that Sahlman will be a 15/5K guy. I don’t recall any well trained, elite HSer changing his stripes in college.
So then where do 10k runners come from? Does it mean that our best 10k runners were not elite runners in high school? Or do we already know which current high schoolers will be our top 10k runners at age 23+?

It was no mystery that runners like Virgin, Ritz, Rupp and Salazar were going to be 5/10K guys. There was never a chance those guys were going to run the 1500m in college. Pre fancied himself to be a miler when he started at Oregon but Bowerman immediately told him it was not going to happen.

You can start to predict where some of the top high schoolers will be in college. Harrison seems almost certainly to be a 800/1500 type. He's only a h.s. junior but I see Birnbaum as a 800/1500 type. Lex Young, despite having run sub 4:02 for the mile, looks to me like a 5/10k guy in college. Gary Martin is a bit more fluid. I compare him to Cooper Teare, with a 1500/3K/5K range. Colin Sahlman will not be a 800/1500 guy, more like Martin as a 1500/3K/5K guy.

I agree with all that and it’s just not the top guys. A 4:25/9:30 HSer will undoubtedly run the 5000/10000m in college.

Jonathan Riley- 3:43, 4:03 (?) in HS was a 3K/5K guy in HS. There are tons of other examples.
If he does gain weight, it will come from physical maturity. He ran 1:48 and was the best HS XC runner in the U.S. at 125lbs. I believe that had he been 5-10lbs heavier, he wouldn’t have been as successful.
You’re missing the point. As I stated in my first post, he’s so fast now BECAUSE he’s skinny, not in spite of it. Unfortunately, we know from history that this is not a great recipe for continual improvement, at least with most other runners.
Colin surely does not hope to top out at 3:52, 13:05, 27:00. He wants to be a world bearer. To maintain health, he will likely have to gain 5.
It’s not a criticism; the kid is absolutely incredible! It’s just an observation!
You’re over explaining. He’s a boy now. He’ll gain weight simply because he’ll be a man soon. No different than Ritz putting some muscle onto his tiny HS body once he matured.

The Young twins remind me of Fisher, so I will go with them. So the 8:35 guys (this year, maybe 8:30 or less next)
Just about any HSer with a strength runner’s 15 second change in pace from the mile to 2-mile will end up being a 5000/1000m guy. Examples would inlude Virgin 4:05/8:41 and Pre 4:06/8:42.
