Scholarships and money will not be an issue at Tennessee. He will have all the resources he needs. This AD and the administration are serious people. If he doesn’t win it won’t be because of lack of resources. New indoor track coming too.
This has dirty money written all over it. Opposing coaches will be reporting him for recruiting violations left and right.
The NIL money is legal although you can make a good case a lot of it is "dirty" as boosters use their companies to funnel money to the athletes through NIL contracts.

Pretty much none of these NIL are legit where the company can expect to get back more than they invest. The first couple of deals had the advantage of generating press but at this point these deals hardly even get mentioned. But they are legal so if the local running store wants to sponsor the XC team and have them give weekly talks at the store, they can.
WOW! Didn't most of the ND kids go there because of him? And then he just leaves them all lol
you think you know a guy....
Being a track coach is a job like any other. You can't expect people to not pursue what they feel are better opportunities just because someone came to your school or company because of you. Coaches could never leave then since someone is always there because of them, someone they recruited.

This is a big reason that the transfer portal exists.
Also, if you're ND and you really want him to stay, pay the guy more than $100k (as reported above). They are paying the football coach somewhere between $5-10M. Lift up the couch cushions and find another $100k for the guy.

I’m sure the coach factored into kids decision to attend ND, but if a kid picks a school primarily because of the coach, that’s not good decision making. And to be sure, if Carlson was at Indiana State, those kids would not have gone there for him. No offense to the Sycamores.
On Monday, June 13, 2022 Vice Chancellor/Director of Athletics Danny White formally introduced Head Coach and Director of Track & Field Duane Ross and Head Coach
All the buzz at NCAA’s was that he does have separate budget and scholarships from Ross. So no, the title is not made up. Totally new model UT is going with
AD Danny White, the definition of nepotism and entitlement, doesn't have a clue.
Doesn't have a clue? He seems to be doing pretty damn well. If you asked me who to hire, I could easily tell ADs how to win. 15 years ago, it was obvious, "Hire Pat Henry."Then Floreal.
Also for all those saying how it’s hard to recruit distance runners to Tennessee because it’s academics are worse than ND. Let’s ask Arkansas, Oregon, Iona, Portland, Tulsa, Iowa State and Ok State about that problem. Talent is everywhere, just because you can’t get the footlocker national champ doesn’t mean you can’t find it.
What do Iowa, Iona, Tulsa and Ok State have in common? Almost all the money goes to distance. That won't be true at Tennessee.
I have heard that there will be some amount of scholarships dedicated specifically to distance as one of the new changes to the program. If true, there will be money in distance - at least more than in previous years. With the resources available at a SEC school, I'd think that having the money to bring in better distance recruits could really be the defining factor in improving their distance, more so than a coaching change in the short term.

Feels like it is getting hard to win in XC without going all in. If the goal is just to be top 3 in the conference and get like 10-15 points outdoors at nationals, that is the type of thing you can do with like 4 scholarships. Or maybe figure out how to exploit the transfer portal. Screw recruiting some 4:07/8:45 kid and hope they run sub 13:40. Wait til after sophomore year and bring in the kids who have kept improving.
They would never do it, but imagine if schools like Stanford, nd, or duke did something like this. Use the carrot of getting that name on the degree and bring in 3-4 sub 1340 guys every year. You would need a couple of them to step up to get you those low sticks up front but you would have incredible depth. You would be top 3 consistently and threaten to win when things lined up.
Might as well set up an altitude dorm while you are at it....
Why would they sacrifice their track team in order to make the distance group better? Dedicated scholarships doesn't mean more, just the he knows how many he has rather than negotiating with other event groups which always makes for a better team.

I've thought about it a little and I think people are making this out harder to be when they say, "But technically you can't give NIL to get someone to go to a shool - so how will the boosters know who to give money to?"
It's very simple. They give everyone who signs a ride $50k or $100k or $25k or whatever it is. So the NIL people just put that out there publicly kind of like UT boosters are doing with linemen.
I wonder if they can even talk to the NIL guys on the recruiting trip. All Sean has to do is say, "The NIL people have offered 50k to every distance runner on the team. Or hell if they are smart they get creative, 100k for every sub-4 guy coming in out of HS, 50k for sub-4:05"
Hell, could they do put it out there like this: "Well give 150k to UT's #1 recruit, 100k to the 2nd recruit, etc." then have them publish a list 1-5 after the sign? That might be pushing it but it's not as hard as we think.
The whole thing is totally bobus anway as the runners name, image and likeness isn't worth that but it won't be shut down for a number of years.
What will be interesting is he may end up getting a different type of kid. At Notre Dame, they went there for the school and team. I mean Nuguse turned down more than 6 figures to run for the team. At Tennessee, you don't wnat to get kids that only go for the money.
It's like why has Texas sucked at football for 15 y ears relatively? It's because they get pampered recruiits who go becuase UT is amazing and has a $50 million dollar locker room, not because they are badass and want to kick ass in football.
not necessarily true. recruiting shouldn’t be too hard
solid state school, top notch facilities, great overall history, and a phenomenal team
Solid state school? Nope. Either you're going there for athletics or you have a 2.0 GPA.
Not to mention the out of state tuition, fees, and R&B at around $50k. Combined with a really weak local recruiting base, this seems like a pipe dream for UT.
I think you all will be surprised when the program is turned around in less than a year. I wouldn’t be surprised if Tennessee places in the top 15 at NCAAs in XC this year. Rumors are circulating about transfers and with a couple solid guys on the roster, the team could make some immediate noise.

These are clearly two of the top coaches.
The structure proves he doesn't have a clue. Like mentioned earlier he is a classic example of entitlement. It doesn't take a genius to say that Pat Henry or Edrick Floreal or Mike Holloway are outstanding coaches of programs.
So if Carlson reports to the AD, what happens when he decides not to run his distance kids during the track season and Ross is in charge of track & field? Are they two different teams or one?
Seems like a disaster on the way. Also who fires a coach that just had the best team at the university in decades? So if Tennessee doesn't win Track or XC NCAA Championships, both need to be fired.
I could hear everyone speaking but Carlson. Who speaks at a podium with a mic and whispering. Also everyone was dressed appropriately but Carlson who spoke.
