Did people walk around with water bottles or sports beverages in 1960’s and 1970’s? Over hydration is a serious prob

Yeah, there are so many different threads about problems that don’t exist. My HS and college runs included stopping at various drinking fountains and during longer runs on hot days, I was always looking forward to the next one. Later being able to carry a bottle was far better.

Why are your worried about it? Are your feelings hurt?

The problem that doesn't exist is widespread dehydration.

I'm sure that whenever you leave your house you have your water bottle and your purse. No doubt you find comfort in that.

I just drink more coffee.

Bottled water did not really exist in the 60s and 70s. That is a recent thing. As others have said a Thermos or fountain was it.

Gatorade came to our HS basketball team in about 1976. Served room temp and with skepticism, did not gain acceptance for many more years.

Current society is OCD about everything and hydration and just a part of that.

Hydrating is very good. But there isn't really a problem for HS runners, who intuitively understand and desire water and other helpful fluids. Extra hydration is fine, and for some kids who forget to drink enough, it does make a big difference. Dedicated runners already know enough to drink enough. My HS season's were full of hamburger eating contests, and lots of water and other drinks.

That's the questionable premise --> The idea that going by thirst is insufficient.

Someone makes a claim and then it becomes gospel truth.

Says who? Based on what? "studies"??

Studies on human nutrition are almost impossible to get right. Not because scientists are stupid, but because we can't (won't) lock humans in a cage and control and measure everything.

If you want proof then watch the Joe Rogan podcast episode where he pitted a vegan against a paleo/keto guy. Both were credentialed, one was a medical doctor. Rogan was the moderator and it was an abomination. It was one dude citing a study only to have the other dude say that the study was bogus. They took turns doing that. Over and over and over and over.

My take: Is thirst a generally reliable method to optimize and regulate water intake. I say yes. Based on what? Answer: the history of humans.

It's ridiculous what the H2O lobby and the hydration industry has done to commercialize and gentrify water, which is a basic requirement of life. The government should nationalize hydration and supply free water to everyone.

When I was in college x-c the team went for a 5 mile run on a very hot September afternoon. After the 5 mile run we came upon a long hill. Our coach told us we had to do ten sprints up and then run 5 miles back to campus.

After the run to the hill and now knowing that we had to run this hill ten times, we knocked on a neighbors door to get permission to drink from their hose. An old lady, she was really nice, after hearing how far we ran to get there offered us ice cold lemon-aid.

We were grateful for her generosity, even though we only wanted water. Holy cow she must have put 3 pounds of sugar in that lemon-aid. This combination did not satiate our thirst. In fact it made it worse.

When we got done with our hills we went back to her house and took a long drink from her hose before running back to campus. We never knocked on her door again. We found a different neighbor who'd let us drink from their hose and didn't offer us anything else.

This episode is not about Rogan. He invited a guy from each camp to make their case and debate. These guys are not comedians, flat earth fools or Rogan bros. or MMA fighters. They are legit.

I regularly do two hour runs without drinking anything. Once one's body gets used to it, not a problem. I only drink water and coffee, normal amounts of water, lots of coffee.
