I don't pretend to understand the vagaries of the US political system but can someone please explain to me how someone who has described themselves as "moderate" and "socially liberal" is a bad thing for Democrats (as opined by OP)?
Genuinely curious what I'm missing.
Musk says he is pro free speech.
Twitter has been part of the censorship machine
Many companies wont tolerate harmful speech, misinformation, or dangerous behavior. That was in place long before Twitter nummnutts. Private companies as well as public companies dont have to tolerate bad behavior. There are street corners for that.

And in the case of Twitter they didn't allow correct information if it was sufficiently bad for Democrats.
Obama just said that by Elon buying Twitter intending for it to be a platform for free speech is a threat to democracy. And the woke agrees. That's all you need to know how demented and effed up the woke lefties are.
Trump and GOP lies about stolen elections have changed our democracy forever. Re districting and voter suppression is the norm now based off these lies. And, they are using a political supreme court to do their bidding? How is that not a huge threat to democracy? Hopefully Musker just wants to run it better and allow edits.
Musk has proclaimed himself a "free speech absolutist" and criticized Twitter on some topics, so conservatives feel like Twitter will be more transparent and equitable in terms of free speech vs censorship for conservatives and liberals.
"Authenticating all humans". You will no longer have anonymity like you do here. Some people will think that's good, but 'free speech absolutism' includes the right to anonymous speech and freedom from retaliation, which providing your personal info to Twitter increases the risk off.
This digital 'town hall' narrative is gas lighting. Nobody owns the town hall / town square. If he believed this stuff he would renounce his ownership and make Twitter a non-profit. But he won't.

You can choose to be anonymous. He's suggesting anyone can get a blue check if they want, which of course the bluechecks hate because their badge would no longer be special.
I heard this story from an admissions person. An applicant listed Musk and Thiel as role models and that applicant was labeled Conservative because both of those guys are Conservatives. It is ridiculous to pay $50 for an application and be dismissed simply on an idiocy like that.
So are we going to see some more balance in viewpoints now? Is this the end of the Cancel Culture? Is it OK to be a Centrist now? Or are Centrists still "against us because they are not with us"?

1984's Big Brother is here and is names Elon Musk.
"Authenticating all humans" seems to mean giving Musk all of your personal information. Expect that to include facial scans, fingerprints, drivers licenses, voting IDs, credit cards, allowing him to confirm the location you post from. Once you give everything away you will be allowed to post as you please, as long as you follow Musk's rules.
This will be one step forward and two steps back. Musk will let the likes of Alex Berenson, Trump, Babylon Bee, etc. back on twitter and won't ban anyone in the future who is mean to LGBT people or spreads anti-vaxxer propaganda, etc. But by opening the door to let back in people who you can make reasonable arguments about why they should not have been banned, you will also be letting in hordes of neo-Nazis, child molesters, Sovereign Citizens and all the worst of the Pepes and trolls out there. Every "free speech" social media site (Gab, Parler, Rumble, etc.) has almost immediately become overrun with right wingers. Within a few months of loosened moderation standards, everyone's mentions and replies will be filled with racist, homophobic and fascist comments. Trending topics will quickly get overrun with right wing content. People will get sick of spending all day blocking people and leave twitter in droves. Another social media site will become the next twitter by promising to make it a safe from trolls and offensive content.
He is pro insurrection because he thinks it will mean he can make not pay any taxes on his sitting in stocks, as long as he make the proper political donations, meaning bribes to conservatives who accept bribes as donations.

Not the lies about the Russians stole the election for Trump in 2016?
Twitter is roughly 8-10% of the US social media market. It’s not some monopolistic town hall. Why do people care so much one way or the other. It’s a product that has value to some people and not others. If the changes Musk spearheads make it worse product for some. They will leave. If the changes make it a better product others will join. Sure, the concept of unfettered speech and clear, consistent, minimal moderation is appealing to many. But before we debate the future let’s see what changes are actually implemented.
Well, I guess I can start using that Twitter account I made five years ago, if I can find it. Btw it boggles the mind to think how many normal, decent compatriots have been banned from Twitter in recent years. I hope they are all restored.
The share of the social media market is largely irrelevant. What matters is who is on Twitter. And it’s 98% of Congress, every journalist who matters, plus countless sports stars, companies, nonprofits, business people, public intellectuals and celebrities.
Twitter may not be the biggest social network but it’s ability to drive public opinion is unmatched. That’s why it is valued so highly.
Precious Roy - would you let Berenson on a platform to discuss his book about marijuana and psychoses? Hard to argue against it, and one reason censorship is difficult to implement. If Berenson is wrong about vax issues, let it be sorted out.

You seriously live in a coastal-elite bubble if you think Twitter is the main driver of public opinion. It plays a role but to act like it’s something special is fantastical thinking.
I am all for many of Elon’s proposed changes. Moderation needs to be clearer and more aggressive towards spam - his anti-spam-bot crusade will be a big upgrade for the platform.
For a guy who is extremely smart, paying $44 billion for Twitter is beyond stupid and mentioning free speech about a social media platform. Yes you are free to open your mouth or write idiotic nonsense and lies. They are consequences for your actions. Ask the orange idiot who was banned for lying thousands of times.
Why doesn't Elon just start his own social media site? It would have been much cheaper than spending $44B
