As a Russian citizen who decided to flee the country as soon as the war started I can assure you quite a lot of people do sympathise with common Russian folks. I don't have to go into details of my personal situation or my views on Putin's regime for them to express sympathy, too.

Its the classic question. To what extent are the Russian citizens tacitly approving of all this? In a dictatorship with oligarchs, where you go to prison for demonstrating? Its easy to say why are they not icing Putin as he walks down the street! Nobody should be amazed at the effectiveness of lies and gaslighting that is being done in Russia. Look at the US over the last 5 years. 1/3 of the population believe a criminal, narcissist, money laundering, pathological liar was sent by God Almighty to rule the country for their benefit as a Christian nation. Oh Yeah, and they also believe that vaccines that have been proven to be affective medicine for 50 years are the governments secret method of control and to kill us.

People get the government they deserve. If Russians want to get rid of their war-mongering sociopath in charge they can. It can be an election, a revolution, or a coup but they have the power to stop him if they disagree with him. If the do none of that then the blood is on their hands too.
Quite literally you can walk away from a battle you don't want to fight. Some Russians have already done this. Bootlickers may claim this "is against Russian law" but I am not particularly concerned with their legal code.

And the alternative is executing civilians? Look, I agree it's a terrible position to put 'innocent' soldiers/people in but the 'just following orders to murder civilians' excuse has been dismissed for generations.
A good solider could desert without getting caught. I suppose the average Russian solider would fail at this just like all their other offensive efforts.
