So I'm writing from Serbia where it's 4:15 am. Did this race really happen?
This is quite honestly disgraceful. Not necessarily by them. I get it - they are young. But someone with experience, their agent or coach ,etc. needs to tell them, "This is a bad look. The world needs to be less self-absorbed."
We were told they needed to skip World Indoors as they didn't want to race much so they could get ready for World Outdoors. Instead, they run a mediocre 13:06 on the same day as World Indoors. I mean my god. I used to be a college coach. If they need a hard effort - then a hard 3k at Worlds would have worked perfectly. I don't want to hear a bunch of crap about how the travel would cost them a lot of time - it would have cost them to miss 2 workouts.
And I don't want to hear a bunch of crap about how Teare needs the standard. If he can't hit the standard at Pre, then he shouldn't be considering going to Worlds.
Someone in the comments section of our live podcast asked us what I thought they'd run. I said, "My God, they'd better break 13:00 or I'm irate."
I think another t-shirt needs to be made. "I skipped World Indoors and all I got was this lousy 5k pb."
Weldon is right. When World Athletics issues qualifying standards, the window should only include dates after the end of the indoor season unless the race is run indoors.
Rojo I mean Teare didn’t even get to run at USAs due to COVID, he didn’t have the option. Not really sure what you’d criticize him for, it’s not like there’re big meets to run right now if you’re not in Worlds. 13:06 with a 55 high 400 I guess is mediocre. You also don’t even know if Pre will have a non-WR attempt 5k (I hope not that’d be a joke).
So I guess this is a Hocker critique then? Yes I would have rather he raced at Worlds. You made up the part about them not wanting to race much as the rationale. Hocker’s team said this: “Cole is really focusing to be at his very best in Eugene for the World (Outdoor) Championships in July with the championships being so early this year and for the first time ever in the U.S.” I hope they race a lot, and indoors they did a good bit (3 races). I’m assuming Cole ran this to help out his teammate and get a new PB. World Athletics screwed up on the scheduling and many coaches/athletes with Trials systems are mostly playing it safe.
I know people don't like this, but I wish they would hype up their races/TTs a bit more. It would be #Goodforthesport.

I agree with you 100%. It’s such a bad look that Hocker would do this TT when the next day he could have been competing v Jakob in the 1500 or Barega in the 3000. I don’t blame the athletes, but it shows how f’d up the sport is right now.
I don’t love that World Indoors isn’t a true major, but it’s not just Hocker. About 2/3 of the best athletes are missing depending on the event. The scheduling doesn’t help nor does the location for West Coast-based athletes.

Rojo how much did you have to drink before you posted that?
Seriously. All year it's been amazing how BTC puts together time trials for their guys but now that Cooper and Teare do it, it's not ok anymore?
Where was Fisher at worlds? I didn't see him there.
To be fair, on the podcast rojo also criticizes BTC for setting up these time trials and skipping world indoors. When they had Fisher on the podcast, rojo asked him straight up why he and BTC are choosing time trials over world indoors. So, it’s not just criticism aimed towards Teare and Hocker for doing it.
That all being said, I personally think the time trials are cool. I’m interested to see how fast people can run. I’m also just about equally interested in seeing how they stack up in a head to head race. It’s about striking a balance, and I just think this part of the season most pros are looking to load up on fast times.
I'll also point out that taking care of the standard now, when you're in phenomenal shape, means you can rest and then get back to building for the championship season without worrying about it. It's a short flight, familiar environment, no time zone change. Celebrate that they're being strategic about nationals and the World Championships (the outdoor ones, that matter). It bodes well for them and for American distance running.
1. As someone posted before, WA needs to do away with standards for countries that have proven they have the athletes to compete. There’s no reason Hocker should have to skip world indoors to get the standard in the outdoor 5k. It’s idiotic.
2. I understand the 10k BTC set up because it was an American record attempt. I’d weigh an American record heavier than a world indoor title. Fisher’s 26:33 is undoubtedly a better result than even an indoor world gold, much less a silver or bronze. Not sure how that’s fixed. Running 13:08 is definitely not better than having a change at an indoor medal.
If they had somehow gotten to Belgrade, they would have been destroyed by the Ethiopians. Of what value to them is that? I've been watching the meet and honestly did not miss them. Just getting to the outdoor Worlds is an honor. Not everyone feels that way about World Indoors. With good reason.
I was at Stanford to watch the race. It was fun to see in person.
Kudos to both Cooper and Cole for being super gracious after the race. They spent a ton of time with the fans - high-fiving, signing autographs, taking selfies. They came across as just super nice and down-to-earth. A lot of fans, including me, left with smiles on our faces.

That’s great. The athletes are not the problem. It’s just the system (standards, schedules, financial incentives, etc) that deprives the fans of the best races and match ups. Hocker might not medal in Belgrade, but who knows for sure. I’d like to have watched him in that setting and see what he could do. I think most fans would.

Bottom line is this. Nothing will change until the rules are changed. Heavily weigh the money geared toward championship races and the athletes will follow

No, I think if he beat Barega et al to win indoor world gold that would be a better result.
