Cole Hocker and Bowerman are trying to tell us something

You won’t find me arguing that 10+ indoor meets is the way to go. My argument is that you can have your cake and eat it too. Indoor can be a great place to find your fitness and add to your resume.

The Olympic champion and the US champion both ran a few indoor races this year and they accomplished a lot (WR for Jakob, Double US champ for Hocker). They are certainly better off financially, mentally, and likely physically because of this.

I also expect both of them to have great outdoor seasons.

the bonus structure for pros weights a world indoor championship less than a us outdoor championship. Why travel to Belgrade to throw off your whole cycle before a US worlds

If Hocker was running against Jakob at worlds I would tune in. Now I have no reason to watch. That’s the disappointing part about this. One more meet would not sabotage his training. Why not test yourself against the best? If you lose you are in the same position as before, if you win you gain confidence that you are capable of beating this person

If racing is more work than training, you aren't training effectively. My threshold workouts are harder than races because of the sheer volume, and my interval workouts are harder because I'm putting in 50-120% more volume than the race at my race pace or faster.

Your whole cycle isn't thrown off by attending world indoor championships.

Until Indoor track becomes a part of the Winter Olympics, it will have no meaning. It's always going to be a bunch of also-rans who want to compete just so they can say they got a "world medal," when everybody knows that medal really doesn't mean what it says it does. I'm sorry, I just can't buy the idea that Drew Windle was the second best 800 runner in the world at one point.

Trust me, college distance runners don't love indoor with everything inside of them. With indoor, you're in season basically year round, always training hard, increasing your risk of injury. I think indoor racing is fun but the season in itself for distance runners is more of a hindrance

This is the guy who always has an excuse after the race and can never figure out why he races so poorly. "Well my CV pace 400s said I should've run 18:00 but I didn't break 20:00. I must need the Streakhyperbetafly. That's it."

I'm in the northeast. kids ive had in indoor often LOVE it. the elements don't exist, and there is only one meet per week, AT MOST (probably averages 2 meets every 3 weeks). Compare to outdoor where there is often a dual and an invite to work around, and it is heaven.

Runners like racing. Most kids wouldn't know what to do with themselves if they had to train for weeks and months without meets. Not everybody is a Jakob with the carrot of best in the world dangling in front of them for motivation.

This is one of Mahkloufi's workouts done during the season he won 2 Olympic silver medals. Ask yourself - would you rather do this workout (which included an 800 rep at a second off 800 race pace) or run a race?

Not sure what your point is, science boy. I doubt that the workout you missed for an indoor meet was anything close to what Makhloufi was doing. To be fair, you probably didn't have access to EPO either.

How dare you degrade Windle's accomplishment. He is a damn silver medalist. What the heck have you done besides spew some crap on this board. World championship events, indoor or outdoor, are competitive, impressive, etc. There's no real difference between world championships and olympics besides the hype, which is yet another problem with this sport. Why only care about track&field every 4 years?? Why not respect athletes competing at world championship events you pleb.

You have to race if you want to get into racing shape.

The longest race at indoor nationals was 3000M. Recovery from an all out 3000 is going to be less than a week. It's hard to imagine how racing a 3000, in February, is going to negatively affect anyone's outdoor racing in June.

In most cases, the professionals skip races because they don't want to risk the embarrassment of getting "smoked". For example, Hocker knew there was little risk of not being a top finisher at the recent US Indoor Championships. So he decided to double. Running at world's is another story. His stock goes down if he gets beaten badly. So, he has decided to stay home.
