Her time is like a minute 40 behind the WR. Why are we getting excited about it? Are we celebrating a guy running 14:20? Abby S runs a 22:09 (no. 2 ALL TIME) and we are instead celebrating a performance which is maybe the 23,000th of all time?
Because I wish her the best. Too many times high school phenoms didn't farewell after gaining national attention. I hope Tuohy stays healthy and continues to excell into a pro career. To witness her go from high school college and excell as a pro. Will be great. I for one wish Tuohy the best. Some past high school phenoms have gained notoriety for the wrong reasons. It's time we have a positive person and successful career to reflect on.
Both have to drop 1:30 to medal. It doesn't matter if there are 50 people between you and 3rd or 500 people between you and 3rd. Both have to drop 1:30 so she is no more likely to earn a global medal than a guy at 14:20.

That's like saying that it's the same as a 1:40.8 100m female. Only 90 seconds away, right? That's how you should look at it?
No. The male and female 5k runners both require the same level of improvement and very similar % improvement. You are free to do the math. This isn't a complex fact. The woman has a higher world ranking but is no more likely to medal than the man. Both have to improve the same amount. If both improve by 30 seconds, the man will move ahead of many more people than the woman which your logic would say that he improved more. If you improve by 30 seconds and your wife also does, do you tell her that her improvement was less than yours?

But 90s is not the same % improvement for both. That's the point. The 1:40.8 female 100m runner also has to improve 90s just like the 14:20 5000m man and the 15:41 5000m woman. I just used an extreme example to show the faulty logic.
shes a high school phenom, the most popular hs distance runner of the decade.. and the greatest female high school distance runner of all time who has not burned out like all of the others before her and with her
after graduating high school and getting knee surgery, everyone here said that shes done and will not run faster times than her hs records, but here she is .. winning ncaa championships and developing a beastly kick, breaking records again .. she broke the US Junior 3k record last december with 8:54, a time that would place her 6th in the USATF Championships yesterday
This sums it up for me. As well as she has performed, she still comes up as an under dog sometimes because of the haters predicting her slide into decrepity. I am a huge fan of women's distance running in general, but I like Touhy not just because she is fast, but she is humble and gracious, and she has incredible perseverance. If I were betting on someone to go the distance, it would be her. She doesn't have to break a record every time out for me to enjoy watching her race. She won, and she qualified for nationals in the 5K. That was all she really needed to do. If she had run some incredible time, there are people on here who would criticize her for going too hard the week before nationals. She continues to be successful and improve, and she seems to be great at ignoring unsolicited appraisals of her talent.
She is really just getting started, and I look forward to cheering her on as long as she is racing in any capacity.
Or set one faster time before becoming injured and missing nationals entirely, and a time not eligible for the U20 record. That's the trick in this age group, avoiding injury. Most of the top recruits have not. And returning from an injury is no picnic. It is not a matter of whether a runner can have one strong race or strong season. What matters is longevity. We have had a few runners in college recently flashpan and then seemingly disappear.
Parker Valby is in her class. Parker Valby is faster.
if parker valby is in katelyn tuohy's class and runs 8:53 then shouldn't the school announce that she broke the u20 3k record ?? but i gues shes not 19 ... also, how come she scratches from the only race she qualified
story time guys.. i dont have class today so im on youtube watching races again and im watching acc mile and the 3000m race and thinking about how katelyn tuohy can win these races too .. parks closed on the 1 mile at 33 and 32 .. tuohy closed the 5k 33 32 ... fegans closed in on 3k 33 and 34 .. chmiel 34 and 35
lets say kelsey's the one to beat at 5k and 3k but looking at kelsey's closing speed, her fastest is at 34 during the 3k vs pros at camel city invite... her closing speed on her nc state 5k record at boston opener was 36 and 37.. the only runner that has a faster closing speed than katelyn in her team is sam bush but she has troubles when its a fast pace
i hope that kick of katelyn stays and she continuous to improve on it, add her almost perfect running form, and shes surely set to run w the top runners .. just has to stay in shape and be smart during a race .. its the kick that people have always complained about ,... now shes got that 32s kick which im so stoked about!
