Ted Nugent Rails Against Rock Hall of Fame for Inducting Patti Smith, Grandmaster Flash and Madonna

They've turned the Rock Hall into a participation award for people they like. it doesn't have anything to do with actual accomplishment or relevance at this point.

They did the same thing with the Nobel Prize.

If at first you can't succeed just lower the standards so much that everyone "succeeds".

I’m all for the RHOF rebranding to something else so that the genre inclusivity makes sense. But until then the institution is a shell of its former self and has lost, in my opinion, a lot of legitimacy in recent years. The blame almost squarely lies with Jann Wenner, dbag extraordinaire

Average White Band was pretty middling 70s funk. They weren't as anywhere lame as Nugent -- few artists are -- but they were nothing to write home about either. AWB is pretty much forgotten. And no, they never hot inducted into the RRHOF and never will be.

PS. Nugent dodged the Vietnam War, which was/is a highly controversial topic both then and now, even amongst the veterans who served in that conflict.

The Rock Hall was placed in Cleveland due to the fact Alan Freed coined the term 'rock and roll' while working there at WJW.

The RR HOF is so lame it hurts to even think about. Even trying to determine what Rock is and how it evolved is lame. The owners of the HOF know that to keep people paying for admission is to relax the definition of what should be in. And it's subjective at any rate, other than the 25 year waiting period. At least with NBA / MLB / NFL / NHL you have a set of numbers to go along with any subjective debate.

Nugent has been making the same point forever. If it a group/artist isn't rock'n'roll or foundational to rock'n'roll he doesn't think they should be in the ROCK'N'ROLL Hall of Fame.

His musical position is apolitical and perfectly reasonable.

I would be concerned if I actually thought someone was as messed up as Bad Wiggins, but it is way more likely that he is a forum sponsored troll just trying to rile people up.

Patti Smith rocks.

I saw her live in 1976 or so, and if you had, you would know that she is the very spirit of rock. of revolt, of divergence, and self-direction. She is so far out there, she's hard to get a handle on sometimes.

Her music is as gutsy as it gets. Her lead guitar player, Lenny Kaye is just amazing.

She is an icon in American music. Groups like REM pay her tribute all the time, because.... they know.

ABBA, Madonna, G'MasterF, Donna Summer, are not rock and roll and should not be in the HoF.

You have to define a genre somehow, and it's pretty obvious to me anyway who is and isnt' rock and roll.

The hard part for the institution is that the rock era ended c.30 years ago so they're almost out of people to bring into the HoF, and that will hurt them financially. So they are reaching for new audiences.

Sad that's it seems to be just about money.

Should be about getting girls. I mean that's what rock and roll is about.

It is a pretty big ballpark. But seriously, credit where credit is due. Nugent can shred. Professional guitarist I know readily concede that Nugent could shred with the best of them. He was just stuck in a genre of guitar rock that made his music cheap and derivative.

If you read the article you'd see that a good chuck of it is direct quotes from Nugent. I'm referring to the quotes, not the author's writing. I don't like the author either, Nugent just sounds senile in the long quotes provided.

I also love Jay Z and Tupac. Obviously they fit the definition of Rock and Roll and as a guitar player myself I prefer songs with real instruments. They are in because the Hall has had to pivot to become more of a music hall of fame rathe than just rock over the last 20 years. I actually think it's a cool thing, because all the great artists in history can be celebrated together rather than trying to separate them into genres. That's how most people age 40 and under operate these days anyway. Anyone that's social and really into music listens to hip hop, classic rock and the like all mixed together. Good music is good music brother.
