Nope. 4:20 is the minimum. Many guys faster than that won't get a look there if he already has enough 4:10 guys this year. You don't seem to understand roster limits or Title IX. Harbaugh will tell kids what his expectations are to be on the football team also but he isn't taking 200 guys who meet the minimum standards. He is taking the 5 stars over the 3 stars just like 4:10 is better than 4:20.

You think if the standard is 4.20 and the team can have 16 men on the xc roster and they currently have 15 athletes and now a 4.08 kid and a 4.19 both ask if they can join the team the coach will say “well 4.20 is the stand I guess I’ll take them both” surprise the answer is sorry 4.19 bro, maybe next year!

This is the longest post I've ever seen on Letsrun.
Now mine is.
If you decided where to go to college and then emailed the coach during the summer, "Hi, I ran 4:19 last season and was wondering if I could walk on since I will be a freshman next semester?", how many teams would say no? I feel like there are maybe only ~10 teams that wouldn't let you try out. The vast majority of teams would say see you first day of practice. Some of the better teams would still let you try out the first week not on roster to see if you are decent or not.

No. That’s literally my exact point.
If there’s a roster spot available and a 4:19 guy comes along, it’s his. If there’s someone faster, it’s theirs.
Also, you would be very, very surprised by how much more flexible title 9 is and roster spots are. No p5 school is going to be completely maxed out boys/girls ratio at all times. There’s usually ways they can add a kid or two

Most power 5 schools do not have a coach that is going to use a favor to get a random 4.19 walk-on on their roster, they will use that favor when a 4.0x kid shows up and then they can go to the admin and say, hey if it’s ok and football and basketball are all squared away I have a really good kid who wants to join the team and will help us score points at the conference meet this year, what can we to get him on the team, I can add a random girl on campus and to the roster or if we have to I have a 4.19 kid on the team with a wack gpa and I will happily cut him if need be. Let’s make this happen.

No. Just the opposite. I had a 4:21 kid get turned down by every B10 school last year. He has great acdemics. We have one of the top programs in the state which makes me think caches check to see how much our kids improve in college.
Great program in HS = probably closer to potential.
Big 10 = Higher expectations for being on the team....even as a walk on.
Great academics = Priority may not be track/xc.
All considered, I am not surprised that your athlete didn't get a slot on a Big 10 squad. Sounds like he/she may have been better off considering an elite academic school (Ivy, NESCAC, etc.)?
Coast to Coast, I scored as a true freshman in the Steeplechase in the ASUN, not sure why are speaking in certainties?
And something to clear up as I've been a coach in the WAC for three years and this exact scenario has happened within our program, be it distance or sprints or field events: "Hey Coach, I ran 4:xx/5:xx, could I walk on?" The answer is: we need to evaluate you. So after we have a conversation, learn your story, learn why you want to continue athletics at the next level, what is your academic standing, did you enroll in enough classes, are you eligible, what is your living situation, get a sense for work ethic and commitment, we will assign a 2 week basic training program ONLY when the athlete has been cleared to be rostered. However, we do not roster him/her at this point. We assign the 2 weeks. Over these 2 weeks we learn if the athlete is the real deal, if even remotely in shape and/or remotely interested in the dedication it takes to be on the program.
One part to clean up is that the Athletic Director is never informed about walk-ons. No "approval" is needed. These are great stories when he/she is at the Conference Championships or NCAA Regionals or Nationals and asks, what's his/her story and you say, "ah, so-and-so is a walk-on..."

I think what I'm saying, to bring it back to the OP, if you are a 4:19 that wants to walk-on you are going to get a lot of questions to understand what happened to bring you to us today and we are willing to work with you because if you've been in this sport over 20+ years you know that a 4:19 kid can become an All-American, as many before have.
I have a former kid right now who was rostered at a P5 during XC but he is off the roster for track. No not a traditional redshirt. The coach told him and two other guys that they are officially not on the roster due to Title IX. He ran about 25:00 in XC this year and 8:25 and 14:30 last year as a freshman. Those were the coach's precise words. This is not the first time that this has happened to one of my former athletes.
100 would say no. And maybe more depending on where they are with roster spots. A coach would be very concerned about a kid who is that far down the road in the process and now decides that he wants to run. Anyone who is all in would want their college and running mapped out by January.
But finding a 4:20 guy on a team does not mean that 99% of 4:20 guys would make the team. It usually means the coach saw the kid run 4:28 as a sophomore and started recruiting him or the kid also ran 15:20 in XC. But most random kids at 1:58/4:20/16:00 will be ignored when they send the coach an email October of senior year because the coach is already locked in with his 4 incoming guys, one of which ran 4:20/15:20 and 3 who ran faster.

A legitimate 4:20 miler will not become an All-American. As I commented before, a 10 second improvement is a good achievement which results in only a 4:10. In XC, he would need to become at least a 14:00 type runner which is about 3× 4:30 and impossible. In HS, 4:20 is a respectable time, but a dime a dozen in college.

Glad I can agree with you on this topic. Your word, legitimate clarifies the matter. If I tell people that Nico Young I challenge some of these posters to list 3 legitimate 4:20 milers who became All Americans. Legitimate 4:20 means 1:58/4:20/9:25 not 1:51/4:20 or 4:20/15:15. Remember that Nico Young has a 2:06 800 PR too.
Some of you just don't get that they publish standards in order to limit the amount of requests they receive. It is a way of screening out hundreds of slower runners. So if the walk-on standard is 4:20, don's expect a reply if slower than 4:20. That also doesn't mean that if they have 4 committed recruits at 4:10-4:15 already this year, that they will respond to the 20 guys who have run 4:18 and filled out a questionnaire. You can look up Michigan's academic admission standards also but guess what? Only 25% of applicants get admitted and most exceed the minimum standards. How many times have you seen kids come to Letsrun complaining they have run faster than 3 kids at Arkansas but the coach rejected them? Or some kid may even say that they ran faster than nearly every kid at Ohio State but the coach told him that they don't need him? It happens all of the time.
SDSU Aztec, I recognize your play on words, protecting your statement by saying "a legitimate" but I present to you multiple cases of kids that did not run sub-4:20 for 1600m in high school. These are factual and that is the beauty of RECRUITING.. you recruit for talent, potential, for what you sense you can develop (at least that is my philosophy). And if you don't know how to use MileSplit you can filter by High School for personal bests. Could go all day as every year there are 2-3 diamonds in the rough that earn AA at DI -

Shea Foster at Oklahoma State and Cy Woods.. never sub-4:30 or sub-9:40... just a workhorse. Earned All-American at NCAA Cross Country.
All American is a high bar, but we had a recent HS grad who was right at your times (1:58/4:21/9:29) who is now a top 3-4 xc runner on a top 20 D1 team in his junior year of college. So I do think athletes of that caliber in HS can contribute at the next level if they are motivated.
Good catches but neither were able to walk-on to real D1 out of high school which is sort of what people are trying to claim. You are correct that coaches missed some gems with these two but nobody could have known.
