Tennis press conferences are stupid. The players are completely beat after running around and smashing the ball back and forth for hours. They then have to sit and get grilled by a weird hodgepodge of sports journalists, some who are tennis experts and others who are just generally cover sports and some who just manage to get press credentials somehow and probably shouldn't even be in the room. The press and the players always do the same dance. The press tries to get the player to admit to some weakness or injury and the player denies it even if true. And it ends up being the same boring and completely forgettable press conference that no one watches and that at best ends up contributing to a single quote in an article or two. It is an especially cruel spectacle when players have to do a press conference after losing a grueling match.
Osaka did the right thing by standing up for her mental health and has hopefully set into motion some reforms that will give players struggling with mental health issues some ability to control their press appearances. Agassi became a meth addict in 1997 due to bouts of severe depression. More recently, Mardy Fish has come out and talked about struggling with an anxiety disorder and Coco Gauf struggled with depression when she first broke through in 2019. There are lots of stories of alcohol and substance abuse in pro tennis. ATF can live without having players sit for press conferences if they are not up for it.
