He was never king of 800m or 10,000m. He won two middle-distance bronze medals (1500 1983 and 800 in 1988). If Steve Cram hadn't gotten injured immediately after destroying prime Cruz in 85, Aouita's reign as 1500m WR holder would have lasted about a month.
Cruz was a shadow of his former self in 88 (and before you say 'but he won silver' - that was because just about everybody else was injured or a shadow of themselves too).
Aouita's 'range' was due to HGH, blood doping, likely EPO (from 87) and running away from Coe, Ovett, and Cram.
1 - 2 -3 I get another 48 hour ban from 'famously anti-doping' LetsRun.
Besides his amazing range (800-10,000) and winning Oly and WC Gold Medals (5000m), Aouita's true claim to fame is that he was the first distance runner to challenge and set WR's from 1500-5000m. Also, there hasn't been a 5000m Oly Champ and World Record holder turn around and medal in the Oly Games at 800m. The only reason he never ran a fast 10k is that he never logged high mileage in training, only 70-80 miles per week, and never made a serious attempt at it. That being said, There is the shadow of doping that hangs over many elite middle-distance runners during this era, and it's hard not to believe Aouita didn't take part in it.

"The only reason he didn't set a fast 10000m time is because he didn't train for it".
Lol, that's just too funny. Ovett trained for the 1500m only, yet he won 800 Olympic gold, beat the Bekele of the day over two miles while breaking the WR, and jogged a half-marathon in borrowed trainers for fun close to 2 minutes outside the (pre EPO) WR at the time.. Aouita spent 18 months training specifically for the 800m to get his bronze medal in a depleted Olympic final. No other 5000m runner before or since has tried that. If Ovett had entered the 1500/final in 1980 he would have been favourite for the 1500 (as he was) and second favourite for the 5000 behind the GDR trained Yifter. If he had trained for the 5000 in 80, he likely would be capable of winning both. Btw, the reason the 1500/5000m WR hadn't been done before Aouita was because of the lack of Africans on EPO.
Also I don't know what you mean about that era having a cloud of doping suspicion over it. You mean as opposed to the 90's and 00's, lol?
Aouita - astonishing transformation at age 23 after moving to Italy, then wintering in the USA and Mexico. Synthetic hgh became available in the USA in 84. Chased out of Australia years later as coach for telling multiple athletes that taking hgh is the only way to win. Employed more doctors than coaches and one - Georges Mouten - was busted for supplying dozens of athletes and cyclists with EPO. Famously employed secretive ' special methods' that he claimed to have discovered that turned him from a b-level athlete at 22 to an all-time great at 23. Despite this, an abject failure in every coaching role he took on. 100% financially motivated and the first bling runner. Avoided the Brits at all costs and his legendary refusal to race his rivals led ultimately to today's Diamond League format. Multiple Moroccan athletes busted after him as soon as the ABP came about.
