Otherwise, Willis ran 2:49.7 outdoors at Penn in 2003. Merber only split 2:53.56 for the 9:15.56 outdoor WR. But Ryun ran 2:46.9 for his last 1200 on dirt in his 3:33 WR race (!)

That 800 guy has the fastest mile time in the NCAA. He is faster than Hocker or Teare.

The NCAA schedule is incredibly demanding, it forces coaches to constantly prepare kids to race. and sure, training for XC builds endurance, but you are also tapering to race and putting in all-out efforts all the time. Without the pressure of XC season, NCAA athletes could train similar to what the Pros do: work hard without worrying about being tired for 4-6 months.

Put in the right Coach to see this, and there you go. There's a reason pros don't race yearround...

Gabe Jennings ran 2:52 at NCAA indoors in 2000 and destroyed everyone. Won OT 1500 four months later. Agree that there's an odor around this split.

Yeah but it was HOW he ran it. Medium slow start and a huge sprint mid race. Same as he started doing in his 1500 races. His trials win, with a :53 from 900 to 1300, was super impressive.

He was definitely at least a 3:32 guy if races existed like they do today.

I suppose I could see how you may think that from afar, but I think Hocker's upside is enormous. From an Indiana runner now, I was faster than him our freshman years, but his junior and senior mile pr was a comparatively much faster 4:07 both years. He wasn't over-trained early in high school, and he wasn't even close to 4:00 until last year, but he's consistently improved a lot every year. He's still knocking 5+ seconds off of all of his pr's, even far into sophomore year.

No shade to Gomez, I don't know much about him, but I think that few elite runners in the NCAA have more upside than Hocker right now, save perhaps Drew Bosley and maybe a few more. Cole's a real talent. Watching in person as he solo'd a 15:00.00 on Laverne convinced me of that.

I also heard Mo Bamba, so the record was pretty much guaranteed.

Well how about Jason Gomez, the sophomore from Iowa State who beat Hocker? He ran 1:47.02 a week ago, which as far as I can tell was his first time under 1:50. He’s only got a 4:19 mile PR.

He's a very talented 800 runner who was a California state champ.

Bumping to give this guy some props on calling out Hocker's 1200 leg. Turns out 3:36 is an understatement! Probably more like 3:32 (3:49 mile) at this point.
