And he assembles good teams and has a halfway decent track record of enabling them to do some of their best work). But as his public visibility increased, the ego took over more and more, and the carnival barker personality really started to ramp up. Then he saw the public thirst for idiotic, mean-spirited trolling, and he couldn’t help himself.
As with so many other cases, he was being much more of a problem than a solution, especially when he waded into politics and government, and then instead of most of the visible criticism being reasonable, a lot of it was just other people of questionable ethics merely lashing out childishly online, committing acts of vandalism, etc. You know the way things go these days: fight fire with more society-destroying fire. So he and his fanboys get to lean into the incredibly weak reasoning of “well, if those are the people you’re upsetting, then what you’re doing is right, so keep doing it.”
And so now we have yet another guy who is, more than anything else, a smug, hypocritical, self-serving troll.
His “what could have been” was never the tech savior super-genius he seems to envision, but it’s miles away from the direction he chose.

Of course, it’s probably best (especially in terms of optics) if he doesn’t directly get involved, but he’s not the one deciding the contract. And who in their right mind would prefer to be so “virtuous” they actively harm their own company / family?
