Clayton doesn’t strike me as having the best mentality amongst pros. Seems like an overthinker and maybe has confidence issues. He says the right things but it comes across like he knows that’s how he ought to think but has trouble really feeling that way. Still leagues better than typical YouTubers and a universe away from whatever’s going on with Philly.
I like Jakob’s vibe much better. He’s very focused on performing his training exactly right while staying as relaxed and casual as possible and exuding confidence.
That's exactly the mentality of most of world's best (in any sport). They are confident
comming off cocky even, but relaxed. They seem happy most of the time and have hobbies that they are passionate about, besides their sport. Jakob's into cars for example. That's a healthy mentality for anybody, really.
Side note: these elites seem to always be surrounded by mostly peers, also people slightly below them and better runners - aka people they are inspired by. They train and live in groups. I think this grounds them. Influencers look like lonely islands surrounded by spouses/family and non-running buddies.Perhaps this is one of the reasons they end up like that. Both in race performance and in presentation.
