I think it is a good bet that they supported the President in the last election. They did not want their son to do this especially after he already got a broken rib in his last LEO encounter.
I don't think Trump cares about the 2028 election. Except if Don Jr (or anyone in his family) runs, why would he care? He's already notably not endorsed Vance so I don't think he really wants him.
And of course, there are other times where he behaves like he'll run in 2028. So again, he wouldn't care about actual elections if he'll just seize power.
