The state of New York is adjusting how it will report Covid-19 hospitalization rates as the infectious omicron variant sweeps through the Empire State. Background: New York has experienced some of the highest Covid-19 hospitalization rates since the beginning of the pandemic. The reporting associated with hospitalization rates raised some eyebrows when patients would be admitted to hospitals for non-Covid related issues but then test positive and add to the hospitalization rate. What Happened: New York Gov. Kathy Hochul says now hospitals must disclose if that patient was admitted for Covid-19 symptoms or for another issue. “So we’re looking at a critical moment, but we’re going to start asking some questions. We talked about the hospitalizations. I have always wondered, we’re looking at the hospitalizations of people testing positive in a hospital,” Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul said Monday. “Is that person in the hospital because of COVID or did they show up there and are routinely tested and showing positive and they may have been asymptomatic or even just had the sniffles.” “Someone is in a car accident, they go to the emergency room, they test positive for COVID while they’re there. They’re not there being treated for COVID.”

The CDC has done a dismal job of data collection throughout the pandemic. Eric Topol has been very loudly and publicly calling out the CDC for there horrible work on data collection for months now. Data on hospital populations has been the worst end of it. We do not have good data on who is vaccinated and who is not among COVID patients and who has what variant. We also do not have good data on hospital admissions due to COVID versus people who test positive in the hospital but had no COVID systems. This is primarily because the Biden admin have been a bunch of pussies and do not want to have any big conflicts with the southern governors over COVID policies. Forcing states to comply with uniform COVID reporting standards would get Abbott and DeSantis on FoxNews and OANN every night complaining about the jack booted thugs at the CDC. So, Biden admin has forced the CDC to just do the best they can with whatever the states are providing in terms of COVID data.
It does need to change because data is critical to making decisions about vaccinations and boosters. It is also important to have good data to be able to anticipate surges in demand for healthcare, PPPs, tests and treatments. And invariably, good timely data could mean the difference between allowing another more virulent variant to get out of a local outbreak and become another nightmare wave of hospitalizations and deaths.
The debate about COVID risk should not be about vaxxed vs unvaxxed. Instead, it’s obese vs non-obese. Tons of unvaccinated are immune & do not get or spread it. Tons of vaccinated are not immune, do get & spread it. So, there’s no “societal good” in demanding others do what you want them to do. Again, if you're truly concerned for your and other's health, lose weight.
