I think the issue is that forcing people into mental institutions is a fundamentally anti-freedom act. Feels very unAmerican.
We are taking peoples' rights away. Not letting them live as they wish.
It ticks off many Americans to have the state not let people live as they want to.
People both on the left and right share that gut feeling.
Balancing that is the right of people not to have to step in human poop and deal with crazy violent people on the street.
Not as easy a call as you are saying.
Agreed...I have a slightly different view though - people on the left tend to not want to institutionalize people because of human rights concerns (many of which are valid), while people on the right don't want to pay for it. Something has to change though - visible homeless are a small part of the homeless population but they easily cause the most disruption and harm.
The person couch surfing or living out of their car probably has some friends / family and a support system but is likely just poor and had some bad things happen; they can be helped with housing assistance. the person screaming into thin air needs to be taken off the streets both for his safety and others'.
