How is SJD not embarrassing Kipchoge? He runs more miles. He runs those miles at far higher altitudes. He even does calisthenics at 14,000 feet! His reasoning is so solid plus he is recruiting so many red blood cells doing pushups and air squats that his hematocrit should be off of the charts! Truly baffling. Can any DGR stans explain this in the comments below?
I mean, I love a bit of Seth bashing and the field wasn’t stacked, but the year Adam Peterman has had puts Seth’s performance at PP into perspective. AP is likely to be crowned Ultra-runner of the year this year having just won WS100 as well as a couple shorter ultras earlier in the year and now surely the favorite for CCC. 2nd place at states, Hayden Hawks, mentioned how strong AP was on the climbs as the reason he couldn’t beat him, yet our boy Seth beat AP by nearly 10mins. Seth’s definitely up there with the top uphill runners, maybe not the Europeans but in NA for sure.
He’s still a ridiculous, catch-phrase spouting, egg eating, poorly trained, main character in his own head. But that performance looks great now.
I'm not going to totally discount the win. It was a good performance. But I don't think Peterman's performance adds much context to it. Clearly Peterman gets better as the race gets longer and more technical. Second, Peterman was actually in the middle of a moderately busy racing season-- he'd run the Speedgoat 50k a month prior to PP (which was his first ever ultra), and in early November he won the Moab trail marathon followed by the JFK 50 mile at the end of the month. We have no idea if he was peaking for PP but it seems unlikely.
In contrast, Seth builds his whole year around Pikes Peak. He ran a half marathon in April and a 10k in mid-June. That's totally his choice, not judging it at all. But it doesn't compare to what someone like Peterman has been doing in terms of his racing calendar. (This year he's already won the Chuckanut 50k and the Canyons 100k in addition to Western States whereas Seth has run one half marathon and one full marathon.)
I think this is even truer for the Euro contingent who race the Golden Trail series as a lot of them have a full winter of repping their countries in skimo. Take Remi Bonnet - a full winter of skimo, did Zegama, a week before the Mount Blanc marathon hops into a Swiss 10k with 1.25k’s of vert. These guys have a jammed calendar of events plus travel. Seth flies once and it’s a months long story about the impact of a few hours sitting.
Completely fair point and I agree regards the whole season context. I just meant that due to how dominant Peterman has been over the last year and considering that, at least in an ultra, he’s known to be a great climber. It’s pretty mad to think that his only loss (i think) was to Seth, in a race where it’s basically won on the accent. And he didn’t just sneak a narrow victory against a tired pro. He beat a 25 year old D1 10k guy, who’s since unbeaten, by nearly 10mins, I assume fueled only by butter and eggs. That single performance is very impressive.
I do agree that it was an impressive performance-- maybe his best. That's why I disagree with people who think he is not a talented runner. To run 2:06 for the ascent in the context of the full marathon is really, really impressive. It makes all of the decisions he's made since then even stranger. Especially with how much he clearly enjoys running in the mountains I am very perplexed as to why he doesn't go full bore into mountain marathons, ultras, and skyraces. Yes, he signed up for Zegama, but Rotterdam was very clearly the emphasis with Zegama more of an afterthought.

I’m perplexed as well. Egg prices are cheaper in Spain. With the amount of eggs he eats the travel costs would even out if money was the real issue.

He's fixated on the OTQ. He also gained a ton of followers on his first go around attempting it, so that likely had something to do with it too.

If you look at the views on his videos, his bug races get the most, shoe reviews also do decently - even better if reviewing a very common shoe like the pegs or the ghosts. but regular daily vlog stuff does the worst. no wonder he is loading it up on shoe reviews, and needs to crank out a high amount of big races each year. it’s entirely view driven!

I agree and I think its such a waste of talent. He could either go for a full winning spree on local/regional races or go all in on big (short) international trail/uphill races. Both options would be very entertaining!
Do you think Seth could be convinced that chickens born and raised at high altitude lay eggs with "special" proteins/nutrients that are beneficial to endurance athletes?
"I don't know...I don't know...I am not an expert in chicken science or bird law. Maybe someone in the DEE GEE RRRR family is a veterinarian or a zoologist and let me know in the comments. OK? QUESTION OF THE DAY!!! If you could sit down and have an omelette with ME and any historical figure...C'mon now! You know that I LOVE my history and MYSELF but, if you could share eggs with me and any person past or present, who would that be?"
Is there another person in all of North America that owns more big performance sport sunglasses than our boy Seth. And wears them on top of his head indoors more often?
"Seth, my great grandfather escaped from Germany in WWII with nothing but the clothes on his back and his prized pocket watch. Unfortunately most of his possessions were destroyed in a house fire many years later, but that pocket watch survived and it remains a treasured family heirloom to this day. Dm me your address I'd love to send it to you! Butter that bread baby!"
Please post this on todays video! You predicted the Question of the Day

Ohhh snap. I'm definitely choosing to believe it's not a coincidence and Seth reads this thread and got some inspiration from me lol.
Seth, if you're out there, I just want to say I'm sorry for all the naughty things I said about you. DGR strong baby. Onward and upward. Butter my doorknob baby. I got loads more of ideas for your vlogs. Hit me up, let's collab.

He is probably reading this thread on top of a 14,000ft mountain to recruit more red blood cells.
