I'm talking about THE PRESENT, THE LAST TWO YEARS.
If you want to bring the Tokyo into it, fine. The world leader on time, Jakob, is 1 for 3 in actually winning when it matters in 2021-22-23.
ZERO FOR TWO WC!
2021 Cheruiyot was the favorite and Jakob drafted of him to win. 2022 and 2023 Jakob has been the favorite and has been unable to control the race and get the gold.
Jakob was in the same position as Tim was in 2021 (minus the injury) where everybody was gunning for him. I don't think we'll ever see anyone control and dominate the 1500 the way Tim did gun to tape in Doha 2019 . And given the depth of the event, I don't think we'll see anything similar to the decade-long reigns of El G and Asbel Kiprop. New talents like Nordas, Nuguse and Reynold keep popping up and a couple are bound to be good enough to usurp him. I also don't think there's going to be a Josh Kerr era either. He's good, but doesn't have what it takes to be dominant. We're still in the Jakob era for the next 2 or 3 seasons imho.
I'm probably in the minority here, but I think Jakob ran well and has nothing to be ashamed of. What her tried today is almost impossible if your name isn't Faith.

Nuguse had a disappointing result but he at least have himself a chance. I don’t understand these guys who go straight to the back and think they’ll make up any sort of significant ground in the final 400
the guy that won bronze was behind hocker with 300m to go....
He has won every race this year but one, but he said himself that he wasn't the best runner today. I am not sure if there are any grounds to pretend that he haven't been the best 1500 runner the last seasons.
There isn’t. But we have to reconcile that in the 2019, 2022 and 2023 seasons Jakob was the #2, #1 and #1 athlete on the circuit. Yet he finished 4th, 2nd and 2nd in the unpaced championship final. It’s not like Silas Kiplagat as far as underachievement but that’s a tough record around his Olympic triumph. So you have to question his stubbornness in how he races the finals.

Jakob dismisses the idea of practicing un-paced races, yet in his only un-paced race with serious competition last year he was trashed by a runner with a slower PR. All the 1500s he ran on the track in 2022 were personally paced DL races, and a slow win at European champs. The LetsRun question was smart: "Should you practice racing unpaced events?"
Reposting my amazing post again.
Like we didn’t see it the other times you reposted it. What do you want, a medal?

im gonna admit this loss has me slightly depressed. I don't even get mad with this stuff anymore. Stacking golds is a huge part of building the all-time legacy, and Jakob lost a huge chance for one tonight.
As a lifelong fan of the buffalo bills, this is the kind of disappointment I have come across far too many times in my life.
Going to get my workout in for the day. I will be channeling my inner JOsh MF Kerr for this one.
I hear you. I'm as big a Jakob's fan you can get. I even argued with my friend he stood a chance against even the prime Bekele in the 5000m. lol
And it always sucks to see someone so close to all-time greatness end up losing it by a narrow margin. Still, I'm positive he will be back stronger on Sunday and fortunately for him (and us :D) we're just one year away from Paris so that's far from being over.
With that said, I was genuinely goosebumped for Kerr. He earned it!

I'm not sure, when he say it himself that he wasn't the best runner today that might mean that this was the best shot he had at winning. No win is guaranteed,

Imagine what Jakob must be feeling. His problem is that he is now 0-for-2 with the target on his back. I wonder if he is reconsidering the notion that running from the front is his best option.
When have the Bills ever been as favored as Jakob to win a championship? Maybe against the Giants in 1991? This loss today was WAY more stunning than last year. Jakob was having one the greatest 1500 seasons of all time and really looked way more dominant and untouchable than last year. I am truly shocked, but that is why it is a sport, so good for T&F! I am trying to think of the most stunning result of the year across running. Is it this loss by Jakob, 2) Kipchoge's destruction at Boston, 3) Hassan's win in London? What are other candidates for the most shocking result in a major competition in 2023??

Agreed. Many people here seem to have forgotten the effect of drafting as well as humid weather.
I think you are correct overall, but this year I think injuries were the problem. I don’t want to give him a complete pass, but it seems like we would’ve seen him a bunch more if not for his injuries. Hopefully next year it’s a more normal schedule.
Is it some common sentiment against the diamond league in the US (getting paid)? Seems like more often than not US runners are not competing as much as many others. (Also travel distance, but still). Time for an europe based US group?
This current crop of west coast based US sprint "stars" got very very lucky with their shoe deals on the back of the Felix-Goucher-Montano sentiment/situation. Seems like a lot more of their $$$ are guaranteed vs performance based - hence this idea that there is seemingly no need to go to Europe anymore and race.
Out of McLaughlin, Mu, Benjamin, Norman (I use these names because they are the ones who for sure have the biggest contracts) you want to guess how many races outside of the US they have run this season? Three. Norman and Benjamin ran Doha and McL ran Paris. That's it. I understand Norman was injured but even in 2022 when he wasn't and won the world title he ran 3 races in Europe in total.
I guess it's great for them that they make so much money from their guaranteed deals - one thing I guarantee is that without appearances and performances in the field you are paid to appear and perform in, these deals aren't going to be as generous on a number of levels when it comes to the next one.
I think we should focus on how much energy it takes to lead versus draft in a championship race. In the last two worlds Jakob has lead and got out kicked. When he got to draft Tim until the last 200 and out kick he won. If it’s a half second to a second per lap it makes sense. He’s doing more work and not seconds better than the rest of the field. Tactics is part of racing so totally fair but an obvious but important observation. In the DL he can draft until the final lap saves him two or three seconds puts his performance tonight similar to his 327 and 328 races on the DL.
It's distasteful how much joy many posters take here in the failure of an athlete.
LOL what? The guy brings it on himself completely; we're taking joy in seeing an arrogant little sh*t get his comeuppance, not in the failure of an athlete. If he stops with the trashy crap and shows his competitors just a little more respect, you can expect the Shadenfruede to diminish... until then, nope!
Have you listened to any other Norwegian athletes interviewed? Haaland, Warholm, Carlsen? It's just cultural. They speak directly and bluntly.

I love how blunt their are! Even Nordas mentioned how he and Ingebrigtsen don't like each other. None of this fake facade garbage.

He doesnt think his tactics cost him this time. They certainly didn’t help him id argue. If youre feeling a little flat or under the weather i think running hard from the front is not the right move. Why not think about condensing the race to the last 600 then? Sounds blasphemous with Jakobs skillset but who is really “fast” in this field considering it weeded out many of the speed guys already. Maybe in a 3:33-35 race not being 100% would show up less than a 3:29 race where he takes on a lot of the lead.
Abel Kipsang with his second time at 4th. Solid contender for best 1500m runner to never medal!
He really needs to work on his final kick.
A runner gets an opportunity for one good sprint in a race. Fast twitch muscles do not refuel during a race. A Kipsang wasted his speed on the first lap. You may or may not watch Thoroughbred horse races. A horse can be an early speed horse and or horse can be a late finishing endurance horse. A horse cannot be both in the same race.

The guy had a 5k in blazing heat in his legs in the last two WC 1500 finals and the winner did not.
