And something to do with traditional right wing US isolationism. And a little to do with feeling the world takes advantage of the US in terms of asking for aid.

Always remember that without illegal immigrants the nation would be poorer and pay more for stuff. And have far worse food. Republicans don't want that. Not at all.
Econ growth stats are being raised partly because of having all these new workers paying taxes and buying stuff.
That will make the debt easier to manage and keep Social Security in better condition.
Sure, it's not per capita growth but at this point we need the economy to grow in absolute terms to handle our massive debts.
