2) If you make less than ~$130,000 (household income), you'll get full tuition there...and about 60 or so other mostly elite colleges in the US. You don't have to be rich to send a kid to Stanford or an Ivy or again, about 60 or so other US colleges that give GREAT financial aid based on income, so pay off debts, own your house, don't have liquid money anywhere when you are within about 2 years of sending a kid to college. IF your kid is very average, then I can get behind a 529 plan or some other savings. IF your kid is gifted and will likely get into one of those elite colleges that pays decent aid, AND you don't expect to have a household income of more than about $130,000, then do what I suggested.
Maybe things have changed in the last 7 years or so but my experiences with colleges and funding were not good. First a family income of less than $130,000 seems very low. Middle class or upper middle class kids get screwed financially. When my kids went through this process they were top notch students, one at the very top of the class the other top 5. The ivies have done away with merit based scholarships. In fact when they find out that you got some outside scholarship based on merit, they reduce your funding by that amount. That truly eliminates any rewards for high achievement. Then they sell a very expensive college program that for some lines of study will just leave a kid in deep debt.
The amount they expect parents to pay is very high. Honestly they are not interested in high achieving white kids from educated parents who are not legacies. They might let you in but they will not not make it easy.
1) Ivy League schools have never given merit-based scholarships...at least not for many decades.
2) $130,000 for a household is very good money in most of the country. In 2023, "The average median household income in the United States was $67,521, but most states range between $50,000—$90,000, with few outliers." - wisevoter.com. From another source, the average US income in 2023 for a person was $59,428. I personally know three people who went to Ivy League schools who got a full ride (tuition and room and board) because their families made less than $80,000 per year household income. Two of them were white students too.
3) Yes, Ivy League schools and other elite schools that give great financial aid based on need will deduct any outside money your kid has earned (National Merit scholarship, etc.). Totally fair.
4) The amount of money Ivy League schools expect parents to pay is very high IF you have more than $130,000 in household income, OR your kid has a huge outside scholarship OR you have a ton of money saved outside retirement accounts. IF your houshold brings in more than that, or you fall into the other categories I mentioned, then an elite school that ONLY gives great needs based aid isn't for you.
Sally's right - if people start saving into a 529 when baby is born and keep saving every month for 18 years, college won't be too much of a burden. But hardly any Americans do that.
Yeah, but what then if your family makes $115,000 annually and your kid WOULD have gotten full tuition and then some, but you have this big pile in a 529, so the elite college takes all of that? I'm not a fan of 529s or even saving for college at all. There are still so many ways to get through college with little to no debt. Best for a family to eliminate debt so that paying for college out of income at the time wouldn't be a huge deal. Saving for retirement is much more important.

529s don't work like that against financial aid. Small effect.
I will be so kind as to remind you: "Nearly Half of Americans Fear They Cannot Pay Their Medical Bills"
I will be so kind to remind you that it is only liberals that fear they cannot pay their alleged medical bills. Conservatives don't stick their hand out to the nanny teat to pay their contractual obligations under the oath of perjury.
You seem to be having some trouble with reading comprehension. So, I'll spell things out for you. And I'll use short words.

US the fastest grower among all big industrial economies
Maybe Bidenomics is putting America first? Just not the way you morans prefer?
Today:
The United States delivered a much bigger-than-expected batch of jobs last month, adding further evidence that the economy still has plenty of steam. Employers added 353,000 jobs in January, the Labor Department reported on Friday, and the unemployment rate remained at 3.7 percent.
These are BS numbers. Every single month has been revised downward, many times from “beating expectations” to “expectations being crushed.” We won’t hold our breath.
They also don't say how much of it is accounted for by people taking on 2nd & 3rd jobs to deal with the cost of living crisis, and of course that many are low paid jobs given to illegal aliens who work for less.

First I agree with your other post about 529 investments not as great as you think.
There is an unfairness is the system. It's not just Ivies that have gotten away with merit scholarships it's most top notch universities. The days where you are rewarded financially for excelling academically are over. I don't think that is fair, if a kid busts his ass to excell, he should get a financial benefit. Our society needs more people like that. And if an outside agency wants to acknowledge and reward the student for his accomplishments, so no it's not right for the colleges to take that money.
Yes a duel income family making 130 grand plus is much higher than average. But when colleges tell parents the exorbitant amount they are now expected to pay it's truly crazy. It's nothing for them to tell parents they need to pay 50 grand or much more per year.
And in some cases it's a fraudulent product. For some areas of study, colleges absolutely know that it's an extremely poor investment. They know this but they never explain this to students.
Academic scholarships are sadly a thing of the past. They really don't need or want very bright kids from uppermiddle class families with educated parents. They want very wealthy legacies and poorer folks so they can feel good about catering to the extremely wealthy.
I will be so kind to remind you that it is only liberals that fear they cannot pay their alleged medical bills. Conservatives don't stick their hand out to the nanny teat to pay their contractual obligations under the oath of perjury.

You can continue to bury your head in the mud, or you can read the agenda for Trump's upcoming Retribution Presidency. The liberal Deep State will be destroyed. All will be destroyed as America is advanced to greatness again.

The benefits outweigh the costs, by a lot.
Just be sure the parent owns the 529 not the kid.
Agip - you are talking to the one person on this planet who has beaten the Dow 32 out of 33 years. We are lucky to have him with us.
The US economy is now apparently growing at around 4%, on top of inflation.
That is extraordinarily high and far in excess of anything during the Trump admin.
Biden's approval should be 60%.
Expect lots of manic screaming about illegal aliens to divert attention from the Biden Boom. Dumb conservative politics!
But with the stock market hitting new highs all the time, 401k balances soaring, inflation retreating in the past, Trump losing his money and his freedom, Biden should start doing better in the polls.
Of course 99% of US citizens will never even see an illegal alien. But they will eat the cheap food made possible by them, and reap the economic rewards of having them here.
Latest estimate: 4.2 percent -- February 01, 2024
Gavin Newsome is the best damn spokesperson the Democrats have. He is the most enthusiastic and articulate Democrat. The perception of the masses doesn't reflect the economic condition.
In the 1930s many right wing Americans identified closer with the Nazis than with, say, the liberal French. Same thing today - many Americans identify closer with 'conservative' 'Christian' Russia than scrappy liberal democracies like Ukraine.
The Ukraine isn't a liberal democracy. There's no freedom of the press, opposition parties are banned, upcoming elections have been cancelled.
7. Most of the military aid we gave Ukraine came back to the US in the form of purchases from our own defense industry. American jobs, taxes, etc.
Their closest ally, Poland, cut support for this thing months ago.
liar
last week:
Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk has arrived in neighbouring Ukraine, aiming to strengthen relations after months of political friction between the two wartime allies. Tusk met his Ukrainian counterpart Denys Shmyhal on Monday and is scheduled to meet President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as Poland explores making more ammunition and military equipment part of a new aid package for Ukraine.
Warsaw has emerged as a key ally for Kyiv as it defends itself against Russia and seeks more financial and military support from Western partners. Poland has also taken in more than one million Ukrainian refugees. “There is no more important issue than supporting Ukraine in its war effort – that is number one,” said Tusk, who assumed office last month, in comments carried on Polish television.

Oh so war enriches the military industrial complex therefore it's good, great argument man
Ukraine isn't an ally, they're a puppet that we pushed into this war. Their closest ally, Poland, cut support for this thing months ago.
Trump will crush liberal Ukraine when his Retribution Presidency is initiated. Trump has the ability to maneuver world events unlike any other president of America, which is a Judeo-Christian nation as built by the Founding Fathers.
The Jan. 6 defendant widely seen as the instigator of the violent breach of Capitol grounds was convicted Friday of multiple felonies for his role in the attack, including the assault of Capitol Police Officer Caroline Edwards, who was briefly knocked unconscious by the force of his charge.
Ryan Samsel and four codefendants, who arrived at the thinly guarded barricades surrounding Capitol grounds even before Donald Trump concluded an address to supporters down the street, were each convicted of participating in the “civil disorder” wrought by the mob and of assaulting one of several police officers who guarded that first line.

Wow, beating up a cop, sounds bad.
If only he were an illegal immigrant in NYC, he'd be free to go without bail.
Just like Bolshevik Russia, maximum punishment for enemies and total immunity for our allies

Are some people not punished or receive light sentences? Probably. But the standard argument by the "party of law & order" seems to be:
Somebody else got either less or no punishment for breaking the law, so the person I like breaking the law should go free too!
Jan 6 was a pre-planned attack on Congress by right wing militia / anti government groups. The mob injured 150 police officers, broke into the Capital to try to stop the ratification of an election. Additionally, they were vandalizing the Capital and chanting to hang the VP and members of Congress.
In a dictatorship such as Russia, the police would have been authorized to open fire, then hunt down the survivors. In America, they have received due process in court. Many have pled guilty and many have been let off too easy.
Remember, it all makes sense when you realize Trump is on the same side as Russia.
We're watching one of the greatest betrayals of recent history and the worst shooting yourself in the foot I can remember. And this is just the start of the Trump/Russia axis if he is elected.

Well there it is. In one cute image, a rock-solid, incontrovertible, airtight argument for isolationism. You've shared this with the political science and history programs at the finest schools I hope? In any event, THANK YOU. A lot of pens (and keyboards) can be set down, now.
