She was in in the wrong here, and claimed to not want to pursue it except that he didn't apologise "properly". What's to apologise for? He put his arm up for protection (or he may have been tripped) and yells "get out of my/the way" as she is backing in to him - he shouldn't have to "decide" to get out of her way as she is clearly not engaged in a predictable pattern for being on a race course (any other interpretation is sheer fantasy). It is nothing more sinister than this, about which there have been too many vitriolic posts against her and him.
The concern I have is that her actions (regardless if the majority or normal people do this), completely disregarded that OTHER people are in a race (also with her kids at the end) and that she was interfering with their right to treat it as such, just so she could get a photo-op.
The real culprit in this story is the RD, who should be banned from ever putting on a race again, and likely prosecuted for slander (not her) and dishonesty - he even lied about what direction (side of the road) the athletes ran. This person is the real douche here, one who completely escalated an innocuous event into an overblown "situation". He is entirely responsible for this whole fiasco, and should be made accountable for it. Also that he allows this kind of behaviour in his race(s) - hers - shows that he isn't responsible enough to even put on a race in an appropriate manner. This kind of person is one who puts the sport into disrepute, for the sake of making money. Don't these people have to go "Race Director's school" or something? Perhaps it is time to require some type of certification before allowing idiots (and I am being charitable here) like him to organize races.

You weren't shoved. You backed into a runner who had no choice but to try and avoid you at the last possible instant, which he did, or else to run right over you, which he didn't. You are lucky that he was able to avoid running right over you, as that is what most people would have done.

This is interesting and potentially could cost USAT sanctioned events tens of thousands in extra insurance costs if this is considered normal behavior.
Alison backpeddles in to Blair as she stops to "high five a friend, kiss a family member or take a photo" because according to USAT it is "normal" and the "majority" do it.
If that's the case someone better inform their insurer because if the competing Blair's of the future get injured by the stupid Alison's of the future, who "do these races for very different reasons than you" and see their actions as "normal", then who pays because I'm sure the events insurer and future Blair's would like to know. I'm guessing the insurer wouldn't see it as "normal" and "majority" behavior and if it is would want to know about it so they can up their premiums.

As the creator of the thread, my input is, of course, worth exactly what you've paid for it. That said, I'd like to say that I actually belong in that camp, too. I do think they were both at fault. When I created the thread, however, my intention was to draw attention to the shockingly unchivalrous triathlete so wrapped up in his pursuit of age-group glory that he shoved (yes, I said punched in the thread title) aside a fellow (female) competitor at the finish.
Of course, I had no idea at the time that Alison's own blog post, the photos of her Pied Piper finish line swarming, the race director's claim to have seen her bruised face from the punch, would all come out. It's been an extraordinary story to follow, in no small part because when you watch the video, you realize just what a TINY story it really is. Almost nothing happened, and certainly nothing worthy of this much attention!

ok; I've patiently waded through this thread; now I'll have my brief say. I've raced for 35 years; a lot of stuff happens on the race course for which a runner needs to be prepared, i.e., another runner rudely crossing your line which requires an adjustment on your part to avoid unnecessary contact and injury. Here, she was definitely in the wrong, for many obvious reasons, and created the situation. But, even if he didn't have much time to react, he could have avoided the contact with her. He could have moved slightly to his left or slowed down, rather than move to his right into her when she was not looking. He had the last-clear-chance to avoid her, even though she was obviously at fault and oblivious to the situation she created. That said, she wasn't knocked down, and certainly wasn't punched, so it makes no sense to have alleged that she had scratches/wound marks on her face. The bottom line: he clearly could have avoided the minimal contact he had with her; since she wasn't looking, he should have realized that she was in a vulnerable position and done more to have avoided her entirely.

You are forgetting about the outbound runner(s) to his left and making assumptions about how quick his reflexes are and how good his depth perception is. He also could slow down, but that might have resulted in him knocking down the woman entirely.
