Playing it by ear. I am in a pretty good position as far as assets and no debts. The only way to really f*ck that up is to get sick or to lose a ton by playing the stock market. On the other hand, you hate to get the miniscule returns that safe investments are now paying. So I will see.

1) No BS, brother. The dividend I got from just ONE fund in my portfolio for September was RIDICULOUS. Some people have part-time jobs that don't provide that much. I'm eager to see what the end of the year brings.

2) Here's the ONLY logical thing I've heard you say in this entire thread - "The only way to really f*ck that up is to get sick or to lose a ton by playing the stock market." The is correct! ESPECIALLY for you since you don't have the stomach for it, but technically it's true because you don't "play" the stock market. You "invest" in companies that are public, and there is no "playing" about it. It's all business, and you invest for the long term. Since you have other investments and no debt and no stomach for the stock market, you should stay out...again, that's the most logical thing I've hear you say (based on how you are) in this whole thread. Go with that.

When a fund pays out a big dividend, the NAV goes down the equivalent amount, so there is no net gain.

although, to be fair, you say have all the money you need - once you are at that point there is no point to take big risks with the stock market.

and no, insiders and big players are not sure of what the market will do. 99% of them got killed in 2002 and 2008.

And you do your investments how? Not thinking at all? Doing what the investment industry tells you?

I had a bad feeling early in the 2008 meltdown when the Dow dropped for over 14,000 to less than 13,000 and got the Hell out and avoided the ride down to 6800. Got back in at 9000, saving myself @ $300k.

How did you "feel" as your investments lost over half their value in a few months (less?).

No inside players lost a dime in the meltdown. Some rich outsiders did, sure. But do you think Bernanke or Bloomberg lost a dime? Of course not.

Bloomberg became mayor of NYC in 2001 at age 59 with a net worth of $1 to $2 billion per Forbes.

Twelve years later (following two massive meltdowns in the market)he is worth well over $30 billion.
