If he really forgot that he ran 4:01 instead of 2:55 it just means he figured its not an important question and if he got away with it it was a chance to look cool and if he didn't it wasn't a gamebreaker. This is very simple, albeit quite nauseating. Like many other insecure average athletes/runners, Paul Ryan tried to impress his interviewer and pump himself up with a fictitious marathon time, one that he could have only dreamed to achieve. No one forgets their marathon PR to the minute! To lie about it by over an hour is an abomination! I am 65 yrs. old and cannot run any longer due to arthritis of the hip, after having completed 23 marathons from 1978-2000. After having total hip replacement surgery, I now am an avid road cyclist and swimmer(serious endurance athletes just change sports as their bodies age and break down) When e-mails became a very popular means of communication, I, without much need for thought, immortalized my marathon PR in my email address, which remains : Edenran257@aol.com (1984 Penn Relays Marathon, PLEASE look it up). Ryan's lie confirms that he has a serious character flaw and cannot be trusted being, if elected, " a heart beat away from the presidency". Furthermore, how naive and stupid is he, that he would not know, that we (T&F statistics freaks, that we are), would not fact check him! Breaking 3:00 hours in a marathon, for those of you who might not be aware, is "the common man's gold medal". It certainly was mine. Paul Ryan is a lying phony who happens to be running for VP of the United States. Do not vote for him or the even bigger hypocrite who chose him as a running mate!
The take away from the Ryan situation is that you can spin politics, but you can't spin run times. Lesson learned.
Not sure I trust the guy who refuses to release his tax returns either.

Overall, I do wish that both the Romney and Obama campaigns would focus on why we should vote for their candidates, less than why we shouldn't vote for their opponents. Take me seriously or not--I'll live either way. (I don't always even take myself seriously.)
I really just want to see a discussion of the candidates that focuses at least as much attention on what's right with Candidate A vs. B as what's wrong--not to eliminate any discussion of negatives, since we need to know both the ups and downs, but not to focus exclusively on the negatives. Unfortunately, both parties have spent more time than I'd like on the latter. But it seems as if that's what they believe (correctly?) that voters respond to.
So my effort here is to make a case FOR my candidate rather than focus on the case AGAINST Romney (others have done that). I get your challenging the website I chose--I want to build my case on solid ground, so appreciate your questioning the choice. But also share info that makes your candidate someone worthy of my vote.
Haven't we all gotten involved in this long thread because of a running-related issue! But it's bringing out a lot of talking points! It intrigues me when a candidate feels the need to inflate her/his accomplishment. Says something about both the candidate and voters' expectations/demands. If it gets us thinking about what we value and want in a candidate, it's a good thing. If it just turns into name calling and one-upsmanship, not so much. And can a candidate show any vulnerability? I look back at, for instance, Muskie in 1972, tearing up, or more recently, Hillary Clinton's tears. Both ended up losing their races--so do we want someone we can regard as above us, superhuman? And so candidates then give in to temptations to show themselves as greater heroes than they are? Maybe we need to find our own source of power/heroism so that we don't look for our leaders to carry that burden? But it's late, and this discussion all too irresistible...

2007 - $161 billion
2008 - $459 billion
Obama elected
2009 - $1.413 trillion
2010 - $1.193 trillion
2011 - $1.300 trillion
2012 - $1.327 trillion (projected)
note on 2009, the Obama defenders will try to claim this belongs to Bush since the FY 2009 budget was supposed to be passed by October, 2008. But it wasn't passed until 2009 and Obama signed it. Of course the largest driver of the increase in the budget deficit in 2009 was the stimulus, which also went into effect during the Obama presidency.
I can't fact check this but, fortunately, Paul Ryan just redid these numbers for us:
2009 - $390 billion
2010 - $500 billion
2011 - $511 billion
2012 - $515 billion (projected)

In all seriousness, the increased deficit comes mostly as a product of (1) a recession (which decreases tax revenues) made severe by the 2008 financial crisis and (2) the extension of the Bush tax cuts.
