3:29.85 is closer to 3:29 because we have an exact measurement. What you are inarticulately trying to explain is rounding. A 3:29.85 can be rounded up to 3:30 by traditional math/time rules. But that’s not track works.

I said an athlete can improve over md and endurance events without being a faster sprinter. That is what the example of Snell was meant to show. That is hardly controversial. Regardless of Lutkenhaus's age, we won't know if he has significantly increased his basic speed till he shows it in a sprint event or in training.
You and others also overlook the obvious point that he has improved over the 800 because that is what he is good at. If he had speed he would be running the 400 regularly as well. But he wouldn't be necessarily making significant improvements in that event either, because - as we see with the example of Quincy Wilson, who has improved only a tenth of a second since he was 16 over his specialist distance - big improvements for prodigies become harder to come by.
Essentially I am saying we don't know if Lutkenhaus has improved his sprint speed because there is nothing to demonstrate it. But unless he makes an improvement from his pr of 22.1 secs over the 200 to 21 secs or better - that is a huge jump - he will never be competitive at an international level over the 400. There are no signs yet he could be.
