With limited time to come back I wasn't sure whether Jakob would prioritize his aerobic strength or sharpening.
Seems from this semi he lacked the sharpness to be competitive in a 3:36 race, but didn't quite feel confident enough in his abilities to take the lead from 800-600 out.
Good post. In this kind of form a big result in the 5000 is just wishful thinking.
A big result? It will be the same thing in 5000m.
I'll tell you this as well, when he posted on IG that stupid "just arrived in Tokyo, let me know what content you want to see" I really knew it wasn't going to go well. What legit contender ever does this? Has he ever done it before? If you are serious about winning a world title you aren't touching down and the first thing you are worried about is your freaking social media content.
I think he's learned a big lesson here too - yes Jakob you are great. But NOBODY, EVER, has been great enough to turn up with zero race fitness in an event like the mens 1500m and just go out and dust guys.
btw if anybody wants a great take for the 5000m - Cole Hocker is going to win that race. 8.10 at 3000m, everyone going to look at each other the next mile with no Jakob to make the move, he will be the only one capable of a sub 53 last lap.
You're welcome.
I was saying PRECISELY that a big result at 5000 for him is not happening.
I agree with you about Hocker in the 5000m; whomever wants to win gold better make it fast enough to drop him.
Assefa gets out run for the second straight year in the final straight. Where's the 800 speed now?
because marathon is a survival fest. It's less about kick than being able to hang on. And PRs from shorter distances don't always predict your kick. Like how Chebet just trounced Tsegay last night.
Amazing performance out of Sullivan and McClain. For everyone hating on their early leading- this is a great result. Proud!
No medals. both probably blew up their chances to hang on longer and put up a legitimate fight for third
That’s totally fair- but they (on paper) have no business being top 10. Perhaps if they waited until the moves were made they wouldn’t have been able to respond in the same way. It easy to say should’ve would’ve could’ve, but they gave it a go and it was amazing to watch.

Paternain and Vainio ran much more conservative races to finish 3rd and 5th. But it's of course impossible to say how that would have worked for Sullivan and McClain.
