The Hartman/McCabe “duel on a cold clear day” had a very exciting finish. Beginning the last uphill stretch, McCabe jumps out ahead. Soon thereafter, Hartman looks back over her right shoulder; not atypically, that’s a sign the runner has conceded, and wants to at least protect their position from pursuers. But no, it wasn’t over just yet.
For the young whippersnappers, “duel on a cold clear day”, is a conflated reference to a couple of old running stories (though I probably should have said “duel on a cold cloudy day”.) 😊
