The only thing i see toxic about Duke right now is the person(s) bashing them on this thread right now. You do not have to have a great distance program to have a great team. IDK how old you are but i remember when Norm was the director and would routinely have some of the worst teams and not give his assistants money for athletes that would be instant national qualifiers. You distance only folks need to get over yourselves. a good program is not solely based on 4 events.

The head coach is trying to save his job and had let Reckart go mid season ( that’s when you know it’s bad). Now Wilbourn is trying to save his job and with all the complaints it’s going to be difficult. The program is in a bad state right now. It’s very toxic and looks to get a new overall this fall. Athletes are very unhappy and Wilbourn’s job is not safe!
Unless someone knows all the details of the matter, it's not cool or ethical to talk ill about this man program. You have his side of things, the athletes, other coaches and somewhere in there is the truth. If they get rid of him because of some unhappy distance runners that says a lot

What details are you missing. Have you been reading ? The program has a lot of complaints and and is an extremely toxic environment and Shawn Wilbourn is on thin ice. He’s a bad director and fired the distance coach when he got hired and brought in his friend Angela Reckart who was an awful coach. With constant complaints and failure he then was forced to fire his friend Reckart because his job is now on line. He’s trying to make it look look he’s leading. Unfortunately for Wilbourn he is dead in the water because of all the complaints about him and failure to lead.
Most likely this job will be open this summer. I just hope Duke makes a good hire for once.

This ain't high school where you get to Ignite all the PTA parents and kids to complain on the coach to get him fired. This is Duke University, they will Consultant with their legal team to make sure they don't end up in a wrongful termination lawsuit. You have to make sure that the complaints are valid and rise to the level of termination. News flash plenty of ADs are dealing with complaints and whining from distance runners. Not sure if they will pull the trigger and fire a guy who won conference 2023, before you say it was because of distance go look at the results from all the success he has had on the track since taking over. He might be a jerk, mean, rough, assertive etc.. We have employment laws for a reason. I assume they will look for a distance minded Director because any other Director won't put up with the whining. Distance runners have made a name for creating drama and toxicity on a team. Just researching the number of coaches fired because of distance drama

I can confirm. The Duke Director is in deep sh!t. Look for a new head coach this summer / fall

As a coach for 15+ years usually it's the sprinters complaining about everything

Speaking from personal experience, athletes from any discipline will have something to complain about displeasure in the coach’s leadership style or training philosophies. Regardless of a coach’s effectiveness to perform their duties, sometimes all it takes is one person with a toxic personality, a narcissist, to really ruin a group of people’s perspective of a coach. Nowadays there’s overcompensation for catering to the needs of students, regardless if they provide ungrounded claims to admin.
I can’t wrap my brain around why people here can’t understand and support other coaches knowing that the job involves battling all kinds of sh** from multiple fronts - lack of support from admin, budgetary constraints, team drama, etc.
