I am very very far from dumb, you condescending jerk. The point I am making is Kipyegon is also human, and subject to stomach bugs, crappy nights of sleep, the whole gamut of stuff that HUMANS are subject to, and to which no one is immune. I also pointed out I'm well aware of how fast Kipyegon is. The point which I've tried repeatedly to make and which you completely ignore is SHE DIDN'T EVEN GIVE HERSELF A SHOT! Get on Kipyegon's shoulder, at the pace they were running it doesn't cost her anything extra. If she does this at the very least that bronze turns into silver, and if for whatever reason Kipyegon is suffering from something and not at her best, perhaps even a shot at gold. Good lord, you're the dumb one here, not me.
I said you seem to be PLAYING dumb. I hope it's not real. (Though that smart people rarely need to say "I'm not dumb.")
You are saying that Hassan should have based her race strategy on the possibility that a runner SIX SECONDS FASTER THAN HER IN THE 1500 would have a "stomach bug or a bad day."
I am saying that is very, very dumb.
Is she were "on Kipyegon's shoulder" there is no reason to ASSUME she would magically get silver. In face she would have been instantly dropped by Kipyegon at the bell, and simply paced the following runners going into the last lap.
Kind of bugs me that Leigh Diffey talked about Kipchoge so much in trying to give props to Faith Kipyegon, saying he's her mentor. I know they're at the same camp but it's been eons since Kipchoge ran track. I rather him have talked about how they both have to leave their children for days in order to train cause that's part of being a MOM and taking care of your family as well as reaching all your personal aspirations.
When Alicia Monson is doing well, he has to point out that her coach Dathan Ritzenheim is sure to be so proud of her. Does he say that about Nuguse?
The reason why not is because, when Kipyegon inevitably ran away from the helpless field (which happened), Hassan would then idiotically be providing free pacing duties for the rest of the field.
Just edit Kipyegon out of the picture and envision a smart race plan for Hassan. That's what you just saw her execute.
that's not an argument for being at the back of the pack. Place yourself in 3rd position then
You realize she was FIFTH at the bell, not the "back of the pack" ... right?
And the first 5 runners were within 0.4s. It's not as if she was far back at all. Go watch again and learn how to WIN a medal.
Hopefully Hassan will respond to that question shortly.
What's particularly strange is that Hassan ran the semi with good tactics. Hassan went to the front early and would have had a fighting chance off the last turn if that has been how the final played out. She would have lost to Faith, but still. Why did she move up early and lead the semi and not do the same in the final off a slower pace? If not lead, just tuck in for 2nd or 3rd after the first 400. Maybe she was too gassed and just couldn't?
And maybe that 1500m tumble in Tokyo was still in her mind. Whether intentional or not, she gave herself full chance for silver but barely half a chance for gold.
I was being mean spirited, but Girma will never beat El Bakkali when it matters. He is not that much faster, if at all, even in a perfectly set up wr race and he can't close with him over the last lap off of really any pace. If Gold is the goal, then Girma should change his event focus. Even though he has run 3:29 for 1500, I don't think his prospects are any better in the longer track distances races either. No shame is being a world record holder and perpetual silver medalist I guess. Beamish will likely never be strong enough to medal, but man, he can close, so in a weird way, he might be an eventual gold medal threat.
Girma ran 7:23 indoors and 7:26 outdoors this year. He has every right to think that he is faster.

But he clearly is NOT faster over the last 200 m of a head to head championship race. It's not close in fact.

Pacing duties? No, Hassan would have been paced by Faith. Yes, in the last 200 Faith would have pulled away, but Hassan would have been right on the rail in great position at the close and no, she is no Faith, but no slouch. Hassan would have been much more likely to get silver having run a shorter last lap with far less distance to make up.
Terrible post.
Listen:
KIPYEGON IS MUCH FASTER THAN HASSAN.
HASSAN IS NOT MUCH FASTER THAN THE FOLLOWING THREE RUNNERS.
The gap would have been, obviously, between Kipyegon and the rest, with Hassan starting at the front of the "chase" pack. Probably the worst possible place, unless you like towing people to the homestretch and then getting kicked down.

Out of genuine curiosity, do folks like Hassan as an athlete? She seems to divide opinions.
Honestly, I do not. I think of her as sort of the women’s Mo Farah. I know PEDs are very pervasive but Hassan’s 2019 improvement and Worlds meet and her associations with Salazar and Aden are just too much for me.

Isn't this exactly what Welteji do to get silver? Pace right behind Kipyegon the whole time?
Not really, how much of racer is he? He literally just followed Girma the entire race and kicked with 100m to go. The steeple finals have been absolutely boring the last 3 years. This should've went before the W 1500m final.
He ran 7:47 pace-- well under the world record-- for the last 2/3 of the race.

Hassan feels most comfortable running in the back and then making her move. With the other events she is probably not aiming to take down kipyegon. She is okay executed what has worked for her time and time again
I feel like I'm living in some sort of parallel universe here... why the eff not put yourself on Kipyegon's shoulder and give yourself a shot at gold? She was not going to blow up at the pace they were running, that's for sure.
I’m not even saying she ran for silver dude. I was saying that your “What was she running for if not gold, fitness? A tempo run?” comment was willfully obtuse. Regardless of whether not she believed she could beat Kipyegon, we’re in agreement that she should have been on Kipyegon’s shoulder at the bell.
I think she just played it safe for once. She goes with Faith when she starts her kick and risks blowing up and finishing out of the medals, per 2016 and 2017. I don't think she expected Faith to come back. Hassan has raced Kipyegon many times and she has never come back once she starts her kick.
She assessed how she was feeling and decided it was not worth the risk going for broke against an opponent that was just better right now. And let's not downplay how good Welteji is. She is a huge talent.
