Are the SEC and B1G 12 schools going to suck up some key coaches now that they can increase their staffing?
Unfortunately, this doesn't help the sport because too many coaches will run to these P5s for unacceptable professional pay just to be listed as staff. This will ultimately leave gaps at the mid-lower Div. I, DII, DIII, NAIA, JUCO,etc.
This is unsustainable: running to P5s for unacceptable pay won't last; ovce these low level assistants start having families and realizing they cannot survive on the meager pay.
Those levels aren't going to exist - at least not in their current form - in a few years lol.
No reason anything other than mid-low level D1 should have to change. Only schools that have to eventually/inevitably pay their players directly will see a significant change in costs
Yea this is probably true… this may actually help the “lower rank schools” because schools will either be elite power schools or d1s that are basically the same as d2/d3 schools. It may be easier for good d3 schools and such to recruit kids when the option is a very competitive d3 program or a terrible watered down d1… and JC programs may get really good kids who were not quite ready to go to top level D1 schools but have that ability with a little extra prep. The real problem for jc is transfer portal makes any school a jc but I think top kids would pick a really good jc team over a crappy d1 in the new landscape.

I mean...yeah, but loads of crappy d1's is not a new landscape and kids still haven't been choosing jc's over them...the only thing that's really changing is now it's going to be more formalized and the mid-majors who could go all in on a certain event group or distance for a good XC team aren't going to be able to keep up anymore as their athletic departments sink. When everyone is crap, 17 year old kids (parents) are still going to choose the better name most of the time.
There needs to be a new thread of "theories on getting a college coaching position" or "please tell me how to get a job". For the unemployed dimwits (me) that wait with bated breath for this thread to be updated with a new "stipend only" job with the preferred requirements of PhD and 10+ years experience in the NCAA, it is deflating when the post is actually a theoretical analysis on getting a job. I'd rather read unfounded rumors and speculation on whether or not Arkansas State is bringing back Alan Webb or going with a new up and comer that will make their mark to bring the Red Wolves back to prominence.
UCCS hiring an "assistant" for 5k per semester but wanting a bachelor’s Degree and competitive running experience and preferring a minimum of two years of coaching experience at either the high school, collegiate level or equivalent is absolutely asinine. The people running these programs (HC, ADs etc.) aren't even trying to hide how little they don't care anymore
According to their website UCCS already has like 6 assistants (unclear how many are strictly volunteers), so I'm curious why the position is being posted at all?

The position is basically a GA position. It's a stipend per semester. Read the advertisement. It's basically for a young person to get their foot in the door.
Looking at the website the coaches you mention are volunteers.
Maryland hired someone 3 years ago after firing a guy who looked like Santa Clause and was really good at injuring all his female distance runners. The next coach continued to injure pretty much al their runners, favored "hard" running, extremely low mileage, and got atrocious results.

I believe volunteer coaches has been eliminated at D I. Though they did allow to add another full time coach to the staff.
