The guy who was there before was a tyrant but at least you knew who was running the country. Now you have multiple competing factions with different objectives and no clear leader. Good luck striking a deal with all those parties.

GHW Bush carrier group is about 3 days out. The Boxer amphibious group is about 9 days out. Trump's new finally final really final deadline is Sunday, unless there is a framework of a deal in which Iran agrees to everything the US demands or markets crash or Trump TACOs again. Israel is pushing hard for Trump to bomb Iran's power and oil infrastructure back to the stone age (or maybe bronze age). They want the US to take down the Khamenei "dynasty".

Iran has apparently been ramping up mining of the straits. Reports are that clearing the straits would take about six months. US is continuing a massive build up in the region with more flights from Europe and the EU transporting equipment to the theater than before the February attacks.

Trump may actually have no choice but to launch an attack this weekend once the GHW Bush carrier group arrives. Trump has until April 29 to go it alone before the war powers act kicks in and requires congressional authorization. Trump can get a 30 day extension, but that requires a certification that additional time is needed to get troops out of the theater in order to end the conflict. Of course, Trump could just be Trump and continue the war without congressional authorization and see whether SCOTUS will grant him even more powers. But there will be a funding issue and congress is looking to vote on May 1 on whether to authorize further fighting.

So, the plan may be to bomb everything that can be bombed in Iran, put the US Navy in the Gulf to try and reopen shipping lanes and declare that the US won the war before the 60 days are up.

There are reports of a split between what is left of the civilian leadership in Iran and the IRGC and Khomeini. IRGC has split from Ghalibaf and does not want to negotiate. Ghalibaf publicly lashed out at hardline opponents, which is pretty amazing. Some are saying that the alleged schism is being overblown and is a US psyops.

Hegseth fired the Navy secretary John Phelan. Semi-official story is that Trump and Hegseth were mad at Phelan for moving too slowly on shipbuilding reforms. Scuttlebutt is that Phelan would go around Hegseth to meet with Trump and was also on the flight list for Epstein island. Hegseth has been afraid that Trump will fire him and has been clearing out anyone below him who might be a potential replacement. Secretary of the Navy is a civilian position. Phelan is just a VC billionaire who fundraised his way into an appointment and has no military experience.

The whole war is a bag of dog sh#t. The smart political move would be to convene a regional peace conference and make everyone in the Middle East resolve all their conflicts so their children can live in peace and be prosperous. Jimmy Carter was generally a dufus but he was able to get Israel and Egypt to end years of off and on wars and enter into a peace treaty that has held to this day. Trump should be unencumbered by prior administrations and the neolib and neocon dogma on the Middle East. He really could have been uniquely situated as a political outsider to stand up to Netanyahu and the US nat sec establishment and get a landmark peace deal in the Middle East done when he came in for his second term. But instead, he let the likes of Adelson, Mark Levin, Netanyahu etc. convince him that the only way to achieve peace in the Middle East is to completely dominate militarily. He fired almost all of the career state department and nat sec advisors who would have told him that starting a war with Iran would not go down how Bibi said it would.

My comments about Trump's next move are predictive and not normative. If he goes through with a huge attack on Iran, it will crash the world economy and leave the Middle East mired in years of war. Iran will be able to respond with attacks on the GCC states and Israel. Odds are pretty good that at least one of the GCC states will have a revolution or end up in a civil war. Odds are also pretty good that Pakistan jumps in to protect the Saudis and Afghanistan responds by launching border attacks on Pakistan. Turkey will definitely invade northwestern Iran and take over Kurdish areas if Iran's government falls. That would be a long and very bloody conflict. A power vacuum in Iran could lead to civil wars (Iran has about 11 different minority groups who could revolt against the Persian majority).

Another interpretation is that for pennies on the dollar of what Trump has done, Carter achieved a long lasting truce that has benefited the US economically far more than the spent money. Trump has made the conflict worse, inserted the US in the middle of it, cost the taxpayers $100B so far, and caused the death of thousands and the displacement of over 1M.

All of your "This is all Israel's fault" posting is letting Trump off the hook for his own stupidity. This war would not have happened under Harris. Gaza would certainly be better off because she would have had guard rails for Israel as Biden did, even if they were not enough.

Upshot is, you voted for this by voting for Trump. Now you regret it, but refuse to admit it and refuse to acknowledge that he was the worse candidate in every way, especially in regards to Gaza, Israel, and the whole middle east.
