I would imagine the pace is going to slow down a lot once Sandy gets within the last 50 miles or so. Not only will she be incredibly tired, but she'll be on busy urban roads for the first time since she started in San Francisco. Lots of traffic and red lights to force frequent stops. That must be difficult mentally. Got to keep singing a happy song to stay positive in the home stretch.

Being Saturday it seems Sandy will have a large group of runners helping her get through. Pete K. had several runners who held some traffic up for him.
Looks like she stopped at 02:49 local time. Gonna get some shut-eye?

Having run a lot of 50/100M races, I know how hard it is to keep a steady pace for that distance. So many ups and downs even in that time frame. I can't imagine day in and day out holding so close to 14:00 pace. It's a testament to Sandy's mental strength, but also to her crew. One of the critical factors in Sandy's success and Mimi's failure is the crew. Kudos to them too.

There is also the rest time and constant eating that contribute to Sandy's success and Mimi's problems. Then there is the weather that Sandy has managed to conquer--running 50+ miles on very cold and windy days. Nearly fourteen hours outside in low 40s with 20 mph winds is hard. Run 50 miles during those conditions and hold a steady pace--even if slowed down.

The long rests are excluded. Everything else is included. A 30-minute stop is excluded. A 2-minute stop is included. If long rests were included the "running" pace would be hard to compare and you would not be able to see when a runner is starting to struggle. When Mimi was running her struggling became obvious. Sandy has yet to experience that same type of slowing more and more as the day goes on.

Which indicates she is consistently cranking out 14:xx splits. But in order to do that, is she consistently taking a 1-2 min break ever X minutes? How many breaks per 5 miles? Or are they consistently timed on the half hour, or full hour?

Runners are different. Just like in any run, some runners can eat and drink running at pace, others slow down or stop. You can train yourself to keep running while still eating and drinking.
