It's a marker, I suspect, of fairly dumb people who were always humbled in any comparative academic setting, but still WANT to believe that they're smart. The answer, at least in part, is a heavy degree of contrarianism in one or more realms (politics, medicine/science, history, etc.).
Can't get a better example than adolt, I suspect. As has been noted over and over again, he sees himself as smart because he KNOWS that the actual MSM journalists are far, far inferior to the podcast hosts, random Tweeters, Uncle Mort, the major network that admitted to systematically lying to its viewers in prime time about something REALLY important, etc., etc, etc.
