I'm supposed to believe Shalene Flanagan in her prime can't keep up with Chepngetich for less than a quarter of the marathon?
Flanagan would be lapped with that time in a competitive 10k in 2024. So, yeah, it seems silly but the Africans have progressed leaps and bounds and the U.S. women's running landscape is treading water.
I believe part of it must be the aspect of the choice to train solo, whether it's cause or effect. Rare is the individual who can consistently put out best efforts without being consistently pushed/pulled by peers in training. More than sharing a coach, this is an aspect shared between Bates and Fauble that contributes to performance outcomes. Bates lives in the same area as Obiri and Kiplagat, who are known to train together. Bates lives in the same area as Lindsay Flanagan, even sharing a sponsor. Tagging along with them a couple times per week for tougher efforts could be far more valuable than even choice of coach.

She is drugged, clean she would run ~2:16 which is awesome, but 2:09 is an absolute joke.
She's blown up before. Maybe that's the type of personality you need to run this. Kinda crazy.

Doing the Scott Fauble - Bosshard's marathoners in general need to stop doing this "the data shows I'm in x shape" stuff.
I want to know what data they are looking at. Clearly, they are interpreting the data incorrectly or cherry picking data points. Are they looking at lactate at LT2? Are they looking at aerobic threshold pace? Are they looking at VO2 max? Are they looking at workouts? Are they looking at recent race results?

Great result for him! 2:11 on a debut is good for an American. Hopefully he makes small, but steady progress over next few years to move into that 2:07-2:09 range
