Can anyone cite an example of a dictator that was a dictator for a brief moment of time just to accomplish a few things but then gave that up after he was done?

FDR in some ways...as the depression raged FDR declared an all-out 100 day push to pass legislation to help people. He wasn't a dictator but a lot of right wingers pushed back hard on his use of executive authority.
Wikipedia: FDR's New Deal faced considerable opposition from both sides of the aisle. Democratic reformists felt the New Deal did not go far enough and Republicans felt that FDR was overstepping his authority.[13] Roosevelt's biggest left-leaning critic was also his biggest political rival. Louisiana's Gov. Huey Long argued that the New Deal didn't go far enough. Long, positioning for his own prospective presidential run, had pushed expansive social programs and infrastructure investments in his state, and wanted to see FDR follow suit on a national level.[14]Although some Democrats had turned on FDR due to the New Deal, the strongest opposition came from Republicans as well as the business sector. The most popular complaints were that the legislative package cost too much and overstepped the government's authority.[15]
Often during his presidency FDR had to back down in the face of Constitutional issues.

Well he certainly said (1) he would rule as a dictator but for only day one. And Sally, anyone who respects our constitution and laws would think this is abhorrent. Trump is telling us, if there are times he thinks he needs to be a dictator and break laws, he will do so without reservation.
And (2) when provided numerous opportunities by Hannity to say he would not abuse laws to go after enemies if elected, he refused to do so.
These are straight facts, and anyone who respects our constitution and laws would condemn Trump for that.
Trump is a real bad guy and dangerous for our country. I think you know that.
It is interesting to watch Trump. He is a prolific and accomplished liar. But he simply refuses to lie about what his goals would be in a 2nd term. People are desperately trying to help him walk this stuff back but he won’t.
He is running on being a fascist dictator because he knows his base is ok with it. he also knows the feeble spineless GOP is scared of him. So by going full fascist they unwittingly go along too because they will not oppose him.
Top donors have started to turn on him, which means the R justices don't need to protect him. Smith knows the justices don't lose anything by doing the right thing, so he put the ball on their court. This SCOTUS ruling may mark the end of trump.
It is not a coincidence that inflation has come down since Republicans took the House. No more blank checks.
Actually, it mostly is a coincidence that inflation is coming down. Year-over-year CPI increases peaked in June 2022 and were coming down pretty steadily in the seven months before the GOP took over the House--not that the Dems or GOP have actually had the major effect on its increase or decrease.
Peak inflation is the point when prices across the economy begin declining from all-time highs. It's a term that most Americans haven't even considered for decades—but now it seems like everyone is talking about it. According...

I heard it posited that SCOTUS is a paper tiger. While they have ultimate authority in the US, it is dependent on other branches of government recognizing and accepting that authority. They know that Trump back in office leaves incredible uncertainty of the power it would have as an institution.
That is why even though they are right leaning, they may turn on Trump in the interest of preserving their institution. In addition to Trumps legal arguments being hubris.

That's what they're saying. Many, many people. Perhaps the most ever. Many of them burly men with tears in their eyes.

And they both liked the idea of camps for generally darker-skinned people.
And there was another guy back then - or two or three - who liked camps. One of them also liked to use descriptors like "vermin." But the names are escaping me at the moment. But strong, strong men. And smart. No doubt men plenty worthy of Trump's envy.
Trumper pre-empt: Yes, there is a difference between the camps.
And no, this doesn't excuse Trump one bit, because he's appealing to the EXACT same human shortcomings.

They are right leaning and all probably dislike Trump. Turning on trump may sour things with the base, but what do they care? They can't get fired and the donors clearly take care of them.

Good example and as others have mentioned other president have over stepped their authority (maybe starting with Jefferson and the Louisiana Purchase) But here is the huge difference and its where all comparisons end, Trump broke laws and over stepped his power and authority to maintain power and to overturn a democratic election. Did any other president do nothing for a long time to stop a group that was attacking the capital with the sole purpose of stopping an election?
Hey, have either of those two people promised to be a dictator?
Dumb: Someone promises to be a dictator and you don't believe them.
Dumber: Someone promises to be a dictator and you LIKE it.
Really, really f***** amazing that in 2023 we could be having a "discussion" about whether someone who mentions being a dictator should be president. And as icing on the cake, tens of millions of as***** like half the posters on this board will pretend that he doesn't really mean it.
You took the dictator quote out of context, dumbazz. It was dictator for ONE DAY: to close the border & drill for oil.

Russian state TV propagandists discussed Zelensky's visit to Washington, rejoiced he is being pressured to negotiate and asserted Russia would not settle for territorial concessions. They said that Trump's return will lead to Russia's victory over NATO.
Remember, if the kremlin is celebrating something it is bad for America.
Russia sees that Trump is a traitor. Trumpers still don’t.
Democrats pass laws against "fatphobia" as apparently that's a bad form of bigotry, while massively systemically discriminating against straight Asian and white males. The Democrat party is a joke
