Interesting video just got recommended to me.
Final conclusion was "for recreational runners the pyramidal approach to training with a high training volume is the hallmark of successful marathon performance...more is better especially if the more is in zone 1" (3 zone model).
In my opinion this would have been much more interesting if the analysis was on an event that wasn't the marathon. No surprise that for the marathon those doing the highest volume and including long runs are generally the fastest at marathons, and also that they do the highest percentage of training in easy zones which is really a given, given the higher volume. The average volume for the sample was 46km per week so hardly a surprise those doing 80km+ were bettter. Pyramidal approach the dominant approach for the fastest runners...again not a real surprise for the marathon: threshold approach like Sirpoc did is much less common for marathon running, same with what they call "true polarized" which again is less favoured for marathon approaches as not doing anything near hm-marathon pace in training would be wild going into a marathon. Step in the right direction though in terms of data availability for analysis from strava, interested to see what comes out of future analyses.
