I was about to say that history eventually judging a given period is of no consolation to those living through it. Which is true.
But then I thought, more broadly, is the United States an example of the fact that NOTHING that humans "learn" about civilization actually permanent? A country founded on opposition to tyranny, that maintains that and improves upon it over nearly 300 years, and then......nearly half of its population easily and quickly embraces authoritarianism EVER WHEN it is wrapped in an entirely transparent and horrible human being like Donald Trump (i.e., they can't even argue that they were "charmed into" authoritarianism).
Almost makes one conclude that, over long time spans, "learning" and "history" actually do far less to guarantee civilization than many of us might have thought.
