Almost makes one conclude that, over long time spans, "learning" and "history" actually do far less to guarantee civilization than many of us might have thought.

Although, it's also silly to let the less-educated off the hook. The principles are extremely simple, and all but the very dumbest large pickup truck drivers understand them. Why did we fight Hitler? Why did we resist the USSR? Etc. If you can understand that, you can understand why Trump is very, very bad.
